I have been asked about the amount of 45/70 chamber remaining with the SMI plug in my encore 45/70 conversion... cleaned the gun well this morning and spent some time measuring,, the best I can tell these are accurate measurments in my gun.
My Breachplug is_________1.156 inches oal The threaded section is____ 0.636 inches And the chamber that remains from the end of the threads to the start of the rifleing is_____________ 0.695 inches
So as long as the powder column is .7 inches the sabot is in the rifling,,,
58 grains of 4198 measures at 1.5 inches unpacked 25 grains of 4759 measures at 0.83 inches unpacked
I measured the powder colums using one of the powder vials that Pete sent with his ram rod, they are slightly oversized from a .45 bore but close.
On another note my encore conversion had been in the safe for a month loaded, I placed a cap and fired off the shot at a squirrel that was sitting on the end of a log at 190 yards, "the distance from the deck to the foot plot" bullet hit 4 inches low and 2 inches to the left which is where it shoulda hit as far as the 4 inches low,,, I shot just leaning against a corner post as a rest,,,Ida hit that sucker if I had used the lead sled and aimed slightly high!
On another note yes I checked to see if it was loaded with my witness mark even though I could tell from looking through the breech plug!
