This was the last weekend of "Regular" season here in NYS. We are in doe mode and I really wanted to take one with my .243. However, the gun doesn't carry well being a big varmint rig/scope.
Soooo...I was on stand twice with the .243 on drives yesterday and had no opportunities. Was a driver twice and shot a large doe on each drive....Using the Savage. Go figure.
Both shots were cake. Both DRT's. When we do drives we usually have an experienced driver on the outside of the zone on the wind advantage side. This driver will hang back 100 yds or so from the other 3 or 4 guys and get deer cutting back. That was me. Shot both does cutting back. They both ran right towards me and then stopped inside 50 yds, turned broadside, and looked over to where they had been bumped from. Not a good position to find yourself in if you are the deer.
2 more savage lessons taught. The .243 never saw action and has been put away for now. Next week is our only ML weekend and guess what I will be using?

Wilms, You need to solve your .243 "carry problem". Check on Gunbroker for a Remington 660. They carry great and they are not all that much for a well cared for piece. Good Shooting! P.S. There's a really nice Remington/Mohawk 600 .243 on there right now going for $139.00. Check it out!

Next year I will have something...thanks for the heads up on that gun. I just think a .243 is the cats A$$ for deer. This year I saw 25+ rifle shot deer. 7MM mags, 30-06, 7mm-08, .308, 270...and this weekend a 6.5 swede. The swede was by far the most efficient cartridge taking deer down fast and not ruining the entire front end. The guy used 140 gr round noses at about 2600 fps. I can't believe the damage done to front quarters with these rifles....more then a hottly loaded Savage...and this is with 10 hole rib shots. Lots of trauma. Good for killing deer...bad for saving front quarters and the tops of the loins.

Congrats on the new rifle season kills, lol. It IS ironic you killed with your savage this year when your could of been scapeling with a .243 ,l0l... After reading all the post about how your experiences with the 325 on deer were, I couldn't see how you can have a better ANY range deer killer in the .50. Good luck Muzzle loading now , the question is "Would you have killled those deer with the .243 in your hands when you were holding your savage... ?? Face it Wilms your just 325ish....and it works,lol...............

Congrats on the deer!
I've got a Browning A-Bolt Mountain Ti in .243, topped with a 3-9x40 VXIII. I think it's still in the 6# range fully loaded. It's easy to carry all day long.
