I hunted the rifle season here in Wis,never saw a deer in 9 days. Put the 300 win mag down and picked up the Savage 50cal . Saw my first deer this afternoon almost a duplicate of kill shot of my Manitoba deer,153 yds laser ranged . It was a bang flop, but it flopped up on its feet and was gone from sight I was losing light fast so i drove back to the house to get a flashlight. At point of impact there was no blood at all, deer ran less than 15 yds straight into the brush. I did observe blood trail then. 250FtX for me plain works. But so far no exit hole. I did not skin it yet to see what the bullet looks like. The live weight was 170 lbs, dressed was 124lbs,does that sound right 46# of guts I'm wondering if my scale is right ? I only have 2 more days to hunt for a buck, then I'm done.

I have always heard 30% of live weight was guts. 30% of 170 would be approximately 50lbs of guts, sounds like your scales are right.

I always thought you got about 65% field dresses weight so you are close to that. I would agree your scales are correct.

30% or 1/3 is correct. Glad you got some venison!

Tar,
30% OR 1/3? That could be a huge difference once you get past 100 lbs live weight.
What are you smokin? ;D

Wilms, The 3% discrepency is dependent on Buck or Doe. The extra 3% should be the antler weight which a doe won't have. You should do more reading,lol............ Tar , I knew what you were saying.............what's he smokin? Greenhorn

That is a nice deer whether it lost 30% or 33% of its live weight.

I can add this much. I got a decent enough buck this year, after everything was said and done and it was all deboned it left 60 pounds of meat. My daughter's was 30 pounds and my uncles buck 28 pounds. You may think we have small deer here but these are corn fed and pretty good sized animals. Field dressed versus just deboned meat I do not know but the 30 to 33 1/3 % percent sounds reasonable to me.

Shot a doe today, could not have asked for better performance with the shot. Used 45 grains of 5744 and 250ftx in a Red crush rib. Hit her at 27yards, she was almost knocked down in her tracks but managed to run about 60 yards until she went down. Complete pass through. Bullet passed through the offside shoulder on exit, golf ball size holes on the rib cage on both exit and entrance sides. Could not have asked for better performance at that loads velocity.

Another congrats.
250-FTX works for me also when put into the right location.

You’re right about what’s left after deboning and cleaning up the meat. It’s worth the effort to enjoy the best table-fare also. Other than neck roasts there is no cut away to throw away once it hits the plate.
