I have a feeling that Agent Rossman has a take on this and hope he sees this:
Does anyone know if these manufacturers are cranking up their machines and adding shifts and OT? Or are they being swamped with regulatory constarints as we speak? It seems a booming time for these guys.....a sector that should be adding jobs. A place to buy stocks even.
Agent Rossman: What are your contacts telling you at headquarters?

Another take on what might be happening. With the apprehension felt by many with Obama now at the helm how has this affected prices of components for firearms? I can see why some places in the near future might be afraid to keep a large investment in stock or manufacturers producing large quantities in not knowing what to expect. Add to the fact the economy is not up to par. Can’t blame them for preparing what might come. Just hate the burden now on sportsman/shooters that the action of criminals and political response that have been imposed on us.

I believe you will find that alot of "Free Americans" are stocking up on all the components they can, and that is why the shelves are bare, they are expexting large taxes and bans on many items in the very near future.
Now that:
One Big Ass Mistake America !!!
has been elected.

Knight recently moved form Iowa to Alabama and supposedly is in a slump. TC has had two serious rounds of lay-offs and I was told that less then half of the employees are working. S&W was having a boom along with SIGARMS but both companies had layoffs last fall just before the election. Remington also had layoffs but they hoped it would be a "temporary" situation but it comes right after they closed the H&R plant. For those who have missed it the now parent company of Remington, Cerberus Capital, has been gobbeling up the firearms industry. Besides Remington they now own Bushmaster and DPMS to get a chunk of the EBR market and they bought Marlin (who owned H&R and NEF).
It seems that while sales of pistols and rifles that may come under a assault rifle ban are booming, makers are not jumping on building up inventory. Makers of hunting shotguns and rifles are suffering a slump. Predictions are for about a 4% drop in sales overall for the firearms industry for this year.

I agree with screwbolts. I went to a gun show ,a couple weeks back, on Sunday looking for some 209A's, bullets and powder. The guy I usually buy the 209A's from told me he sold 180,000 primers by 11:00 o'clock Saturday, and could have sold 180M more.
Could not find the bullets I wanted either. However did line up the powder at the next show.
Go figure.

There was some talk about Federal cutting back on primer component sales and CCI becoming the reloading component (primers) branch of Federal/ATK. They are already made in the same plant and performance wise they have become just about the same from what I understand.
Copper prices pretty much spiked last July (breaking the $4 a pound mark) and is now down to less then $2. Lead prices spiked last year also at over $1.50 a pound and is now back down to the $0.50-0.60 range. Add to that energy cost not just from manufacturing but transportation, cost on bullets went up. While companies cut back on inventory while prices were high there is still a lot of the high priced stuff in the supply chain but as long as we keep paying the high prices companies are going to make the money while they can.

A friend was at a gun show in PA this weekend and was on the lookout for powder and primers for me. (I struck out big time a few weeks ago at my HUGE gunshop)
Last I knew, he had secured a 1000 lg rifle and 1000 FED209A' for me. Powder was not looking good with the exception of a few pounds H4198.
This weekend I went to Walmart and checked out their .22 and .17 inventory. I grabbed the last 700 rds of CCI minimags and 400 rounds of .17 ammo. Most of their ammo shelves are gutted here. The lady told me that their distribution center has told them that "they don't know" when they are getting more ammo supplies. On a brighter note, a friend was at Gander Mountain this weekend and I guess that they have decent ammo supplies.
