You got me going now.. Hope to make it out this Saturday. Nothing like a good dog to hunt over... Great shooting.. We're taking a young lab out for his first hunt alone... He's got promise.
Another thing... Does that little Terrier of yours hunt birds? The reason I ask is that I've got one that is a terror on quail and squirrels. Zen

The little dog is Zoe. She has a nose as good as the Short Hair. She loves the hunt birds and she's not a bad retriever in short grass. She finds as many down birds as Guss and stays with them until you get there in the tall stuff. Once in a while she will come behind Guss and back Guss's point. If you see her take off on a dead run if you want to shoot you better try to keep up cause the birds are running in front of you. She mostly flushes and for the most part stays close. She'll run a squirrel on sight but that's about it. I know a lot of people don't like their bird dogs running rabbits. But after pheasant season closes we run the heck out of the bunnies. Same deal Guss point Zoe flushes. Before we had Zoe fixed she was pretty skinny. It was kinda funny watching a little dog retrieve a big rooster with her back legs a little on the light side. Good thing she's all wheel drive.
I tell new hunters that if you shoot me we'll have words. If you shoot one of my dogs I'll come back in three days and shoot coyotes over your rotting remains. I love my dogs. Warren

I always enjoy following your pheasant hunts with Gus and Zoe and some of your comments often bring back fond memories with my deceased 4-legged partner Shadow. He too loved the pheasant hunts and like Zoe he was quick on finding birds and flushing them. At times I would have to catch my breath from keeping up because he was so excited and focused on quickly finding that bird once he got a whiff of it. At the beginning I wasn’t fond of this practice but afterwards thought he was just keeping me in shape for sure. ;D
Thanks for sharing your hunts.

Walked about 6 miles tonight and saw one hen and a rooster. Guss made a great point on the hen. Then she pointed where the rooster had been. Zoe took off running ahead and I didn't catch on to what she was doing. Zoe kicked it out a little to far away so I didn't shoot. Guss pointed 3 rabbits also but I don't shoot them until it snows. Got a little exercise and had some fun watching the dogs so it was a good day.

I found also that even unproductive days were fun with often enough an interesting event occurring. One such time occurred when Shadow for the first time met Wild Turkeys. After hours of scouring around for pheasants and evening approaching we were calling it a day. While hiking along an old road he spotted a few Turkeys about 100yds in front of us and took off like a rocket after them but for some reason he put on the binders about 50yds from the birds who now where keeping an eye on him. He just stood there staring at the birds and periodically glancing back at me with a puzzled look on his face. From his puzzled glance back I read he didn’t know what to do as he never seen pheasants this big before and add to the fact I wasn’t running after him to get into position for a shot.
After about a minute I said out loud “Hey smart-a$$ it’s your call” and he let out for the birds again. I knew he wouldn’t get to them to do any harm and the birds launched themselves into the nearby woods. When he reached their last location he put his nose to the ground just to get a whiff and kept repeatedly lifting his head and again taking in the scent as if trying to identify something new. After about 5-mins he came back to me again with that puzzled look. What I would have given to know what was going through his mind.
Anyway the two of us still had a 20-minute hike to get back to my vehicle and enjoyed the journey walking together. Even though nothing exciting happened with Shadow’s first encounter with Turkeys it did etch a fond memory in my mind.

Went out it the rain last hour and a half of the day Saturday. Saw 5 or 6 hens an one rooster. Didn't shoot but Guss made two good points and we were outside. Still better than workin.
