The wind died down and switched to more northernly, which favors this hunting area. The deer move into this area from the larger woods from the North. Temps dropped from low 60's to mid 40's.
I decided to go further back on the property and overlook a pond and open area that's 180 Yds across by 150 yd wide.
The Savage spoke twice today. .458" 325g Hornady FTX at slightly over 2400 fps. Once about 20 minutes after I sat down in the chair on the ground. 2 does walked in and eyeballed me from 90 yds. away. (new camp chair, I forgot about the shiny aluminum legs )
I centered the scope on the chest of the most alert one and squeezed the trigger. I saw some hair come off of the right shoulder and bang flop, down she went. The other one stuck around, even letting me load the gun again, but walked off as I finished loading. She did a large circle around me and I had the scope on her at about 120 yds, but she looked like a yearling from this year so I let her walk. She eventually walked behind me at 50 Yds.
Not 40 mintues later I see a couple of does across the field, walking right inside the woodline. I was worried that they'd continue on the trail that the one was laying on, so when I got a chance I put the scope on one of the bigger ones in front. She starts to take a step to go behind some trees so I hurridly squeeze the trigger. She was close to 160 Yds out; at the shot I saw 4 tails bouncing away. I could only see the top half of her, because she was behind a slight rise in the ground. I held the crosshairs an inch or so above the grass. When I saw them run away I thought I shot a bit too low. I reloaded, waited about 15 minutes and went to take a look.
The first one was facing me, with her butt slightly to the right (her left). The bullet entered just to the left of center, and came out at the point of her right shoulder. There's an 8" hole at the shoulder at the exit..... She's about 80# dressed.
The other one? Well, I found some pink lung just past where she was standing, and a little bit a little further down, and very little blood. It took 20 minutes or so to follow the faint trail, and I had only covered about 40 yds. It was almost dark by then, getting really foggy and I was starting to get worried. I shone the flashlight further into the woods I saw the reflection of an eye about 50 yds away. It didn't move, so I made a beeline for it. There she was. It was a high double lung shot, but low enough so it missed the spine. She went about 80-90 yds. The bullet missed ribs on both sides, so the exit was only about 1" dia. Not much blood came out but the inside was full of it. She dressed out at 110#-115#.
I'll take them in tomorrow morning to get registered. I might as well go out tomorrow morning as I'll be cutting up deer the rest of the day anyway. Fresh deer heart is on the menu tonight!
