just looking for some help, got my savage last year, pretty new to the whole deal. was shooting a hornady 50cal. 45-250 gr sst/ml, with kleen bore primers, 43 grains IMR SR-4759. worked great, good pattern and zeroed 1 1/2 " high at 100yds. started playing around abit after the season, seemed that i wasn't burning all my powder after i swabed the barrel with 43 grains. want to back off to 41 grains, has anybody experienced this load or done any work with it, want to zero it at 150yds now, anybody have any info on what velocity i would be running and how much bullet drop i would have at say 250yds, 300yds or is that gained stricktly by trial and error.
thanks .

just as a word of warning you might want to steer away from kleen bore primers for smokeless loads. in colder weather you might have ignition problems. that might be your problem now. you need to use a hotter primer, FED 209As, WINCHEASTER 209, or CCI MAG 209 primers.

Zing I use a hotter primer with 43gr of 4759 and no unburned powder is ever seen. Also my velocity with IMR-43grains of 4759 is slightly over 2300fps.
I use the 250 SW with my loads and also zero at 150yds. At 200 I am 4-1/2" low. At 100yds I am 1.8" high. Never had a range to shoot at over 200. My point Blank calculator says my load should be -14.8" at 250yds.

thanks ed. are the fed209a's a hotter primer than the kleen bore, another question, iswab between each shot wondering when shooting at the range how many shots can or due u put through before it has to be cleaned. say 10 shots if just swabing will star to affect the accuracy.

The Feds are generally considered the hottest of the 3 previously mentioned.

I have had good luck with CCI mag primers also with 4759.

In my case I go for best absolute accuracy and found this routine works the best with my tight bore. From a clean bore fire one primer and dry swab. Fire 4-shots max with dry swabbing in between. After 4-shots do an intermittent bore clean. Then start over as mentioned above. This works for me. I would recommend you try different routines to find the one that works best for you or gives the result level you seek.
After 20-25 shots I do a complete Bore and Breech Plug Cleaning for best results. I am hoping a product that I conditioned my bore with will help with plastic fowling to extend my number of shots with out cleaning. Will find out if it will do what has been advertised.
One of the most popular primers here is the CCI-209M primer that I often seen mentioned. Currently the Cheddite Primer works great in my 10ML-II.
Hope something here mentioned will be helpful to you.

The 250SST is a bit frangible for moose. A 250,290,300 Barnes might be a better choice. Big Moose on this board could be of help to you. I also think you might want to consider one of the slower powder loads. A 300XTP Mag with a HPH-12 sabot and 60g VV-120 would likely do well for you or one of the H-4198 loads(see loads at top of board).

hey ET, u mentioned that after u shoot about 4 times u perform a intermitten bore clean, obviously you are not totally cleaning it, but what exactly are u doing? anything special that u use when you do that?
thanks

I still have a product called Advanced Sabot Shooters Solvent and sorry to say it is not available anymore. But another product called Butch’s Bore shine has the same ingredients with the addition of mineral oil. When I have to get back to using this an additional swab of just regular solvent is used to remove any traces of oil.
For my intermittent bore clean I use a wet patch of cleaner, wait a few minutes and apply a wet patch of cleaner again. After a few more minutes I used a good snug fitting patch fabric and swab the bore, turn it over and repeat dry patch one more time. Then she loads resistance wise like a clean bore and reproduces my accuracy for another 4-shots.
This is something I just stumbled across that my barrel likes and works well for me.

so basiclly, just a bore cleaning solvent? so once you do that do u fire a cap through before u load your next shot?

For any bore cleaning I always fire a primer first without a load and dry swab. This really helps to keep that first shot in the group. If I don't fire that primer first my first shot stays outside of the group.

Just a handy thing I do before shooting my savage 10ml. I spray all the Mmp sabots with silicone spray let it dry. It does not creep off the load and seems to help loading. I use 42 grains n110 and a 250 grain hornady xtp. Spike
