Do any of you guys use a ram-rod guide while shooting ? I usually do while cleaning but not while shooting. I was wondering if it would be better to use a guide at all times to minimize contact with the ram-rod on the rifling. I had some of the brass Kleen-bore guides but can't find them, so, I was thinking about getting something else. Anyone here use rod guides and, if so, what type do you use and recommend ? Where's a good place to purchase them ? Maybe, Rex could build a ram-rod guide too; his starter sure looks good !

sagittarius,
Yes I do and I have not got around to posting a picture of it yet, but was going to do so soon. I found a handy little device at the hardware store. Either Lowes or Home Depot and it costs less than 25 cents each, and it works great.
I will try to post a picture tonight. With the original and then the simple modification to make a guide that can be used at the range and in the field.

I use a T/C bore guide #7158 available from Midway. My 3/8" range rod fits nicely inside and it fits 45 to 58 cal. It cost about $6.

Take your pick for External Barrel fit or Internal Bore fit. Before I had equipment a friend made the External guide even with cut out for front sight. I made the Internal guide fit from an idea that Dave D presented The brass one I always take in the field with me along with my T handle I use on the ramrod. Ed

Okay rangeball and others here is my simple solution to creating a cheap easy and effect rod guide that can be used in the field and at the range. The one on the right is what it looks like from the hardware store either Home Depot or Lowes in the drawers around all the screws and bolts. They come in a two pack for about 50 cents to a buck. It has a 1/2 inch outer diameter and a 3/8 inch inner diameter. What I did to make the one on the left is bend out the side tabs on each side and use a pair of pliers to hold onto the tabs while drilling out the top using a 3/8 inch drill bit from the inside of the cup. Once you have completely drilled the hole clean it up cut off the tabs and you are done. This picture shows it sitting on a stock savage rod. Sorry this one is a little blurry, but it shows it in my gun and it does not touch the barrel when left on the rod inserted in the gun. It stays in place and can be left on the rod to take to the range or in the field. This is a picture of how it sits on the top of the barrel with the rod in the barrel. It works great both at the range and in the field. Pluses are: Light wieght and stays in place Corrosion proof If you break it your only out 25 cents Can stay on your rod all the time to use at the range and in the field Will not harm your barrel end, and will stop your solid rod for harming the end of your barrel. No need for any fancy tools. See sometimes simple is better. Minuses are: Haven't found any yet.

sagittarius,
Glad you like it. I won't shoot without it especially now that I am using a solid aluminum ram rod.
Good luck and good shooting.

olsmokey,
I threw out the plastic wrapper that said what these were, but they can be found in the screw isle in the special draws. You will see a picture of it on the outside of the drawer. I will probably be in there this weekend and get you the name of these things.
rangeball, I will not hold it against you SMI are fine products.

onecardchuck-
I might look for these as well. I've never used a bore guide, just tried to be careful. I ordered a couple brass ones online recently, but for keeping on your rod in the field, I don't think you can get much better and cheaper. Thanks for the heads up!

Okay guys I found out what they are called and even better news when I went into LOWES today they now come in black. If you can't find the black ones locally let me know and I will send you some. Also the cost is $1.04 for a two pack. They are called nylon hole plugs see the image below. I already have my new black one made up and ready to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have used a ramrod guide for a long, long time with my muzzleloaders. It is a habit that came from my benchrest background and not wanting a cleaning rod rubbing the crown on my rifles. With my centerfires, i clean them after a days shooting or at least many shots as well as cleaning them from the breech with a chamber guide, but with my muzzleloaders, i am running a rod down the bore and across the lands/crown with every shot. I can't stand that sort of abuse of a fine barrel. I found some cheap muzzle guides on clearance at WalMart a few years ago for $1.50 each and i never looked back...........
