How do these bullets stack up against each other, regarding performance on deer?
300 xtp 300 xtp mag 300 hdy hp 458 300 rem hp 458
I found my gun prefers both 458's over any 452 combos I have tried so far in terms of accuracy at 250 yds. Rem's are best groups at the moment, shooting about 5 inches. I can live with that for deer, but will still try for better. Bone stock, laminated thumhole, ss, loose bore, 100+ shots so far. Thanks. deadeer

I've never shot a deer with any of those, however of that group the Hornady 458 HP shot best out of my gun. If you have a loose bore then make sure you are using the Harvester Black Crush Rib sabot with .458 bullets. The orange MMP will likely be too loose. If you are looking for a 250 yd .458 bullet try the Barnes Original 300g Semi Spitzer with a Harvester Black Crush Rib sabot. Ballistically its the best .458 300g bullet that is normally shot out of the Savage and at around 2300 fps +/- it will give you all the performance you can ask for from 0-250 yds.

Right on! I have to use bcr w/458, and rcr w/452 with fouled bore, or it's a nogo for ignition. As I have said in the past, it doesn't make sense how many people have opposite experiences with BO's. Same everything, different results, some great, some poor. My luck always leans on the poor side of things. Maybe shot placement is the variable, I don't know, but I hate to hear of some pass thru's/no expansion. All other variables sound similar, mv, distance, deer size 80-200lbs. All close enough to make no sense on good/bad reviews of same bullet. deadeer

There has always been an arguement over the best bullet. One that expands to easily will have penetration issues. A bullet ,like the BO , that penetrates well , some argue it does not expand to their satisfaction.
You have to decide ,based on your experience ,which camp you fall into. The XTP is a pistol bullet. The paper in the XTP box tells you what velocities are acceptable. 2300 fps is not listed. I have not tried the 300 hornady .458. I have shot alot of 300 Rems into bone and news paper and found them tough enough . However ,IMO the 300 BO is the finest bullet, most accurate bullet out of my gun. I have confidence, based on experience ,that I can take any deer from any angle and the bullet will perform. You need to have that kind of confidence in your choice, whatever that may be.
That said , of the bullets you list, I would choose the 300 rem as a good compromise. It would be my choice if I could not get any BO's.

They are all great bullets on deer with the Savage. Pick the one that groups the best. 300 gr .45 cal bullets over 2000 fps do it all on deer. They are big enough that a little weight shed is no big deal. OR if no weight is shed, the hole is too big to worry about.
We are talking well placed shots here.

I like the 300XTP and have killed deer with it, but at <2000fps with "regular" inlines.
What amazes me is that I cannot get a .458 bullet to shoot out of my Savage. Everyone seems to love the .458/300grn BO, but I cannot get them or any other .458 to shoot. I've tried the Hornady and the Remington 300 HP's and I have tried N110, SR4759, RL7 and H4198 and Black Crush Ribs and Orange MMPs. I have a tight bore (for instance .452's and the Short Black MMP are too tight to load) and I guess that's just the way it goes.
300grn/.452'sXTP's, a Black Harvester SB and 65.0 grns. of H4198 shoots under 3" every time at 200 so I'm going with that.
It is funny how some rifles behave...

cgg, You must have a tight bore for the 250 grn xtp and short mmp to be excessively tight! For your application it sounds as if .451 dia bullets/Harvesters sabots would work better.
