I've never tried attractants or placed mineral blocks out for deer hunting. But I saw this product in a Sportsmans Guide catalogue and thought I'd give it try on the lease this year. Bag -R- Buck is 4 pounds of "salt" in a small burlap bag. The bag is hung from a limb about 7 foot off the ground. Rain then dissolves the salt and it drops to the ground for deer to paw and lick. I hung up 3 bags and last weekend we finally got some rain. All 3 bags were being worked hard in less than a week! 1 bag was hung in an 8 inch diamater pine tree and the roots of the tree have been dug out of the ground ;D. Like I said I've never tried anything like this before, but I'm going to get 3 more!

I had a friend that use to use old tube socks filled with salt rocks. He hung them from a tree limb and the deer would lick and paw at the ground also.

It works, so much salt is scattered throughout this area that deer probably have hardening of their arteries. When livestock ranged free over the Ozarks people put out salt (called salt licks). Deer found and used the licks and hunter sometimes ambushed the deer there. People now scrape out a hole and bury stock salt to attract deer. Rain melts the salt and deer dig it up and lick it.

I was thinking of trying that stuff, too. But is that all there is in the bags, just salt? No minerals or attractants?

Ozark, we had public grazing in western NC before WWII and the formation of the Great Smokey Mt National Park. Many locations are named as such-n-such Lick. I have found many salt blocks in the woods over the years and I've never been impressed with the sign around them. However, I am impressed with the response to this product.
Danno, B-R-B literature says it is "beneficial as a supplement". Assay says salt, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, roughage products & natural sweetners. Salt 78-82%, Sodium ~29-34%, Chloride ~46-51%, Copper 166 ppm, Iron 759 ppm, Manganese 906 ppm, Zinc 732 ppm.

I'll tell you what works as good and it don't cost a dime? Down at our range, the club has our own Port-a-Jon which we bought. We have a company that services it when we request. It is up a slight hill and most of the time, if its just the guys around, we go around the side of our "end wall" and Pee there ;D Its practically in the woods so no big deal. Well, lately, we have been noticing that the spots in the dirt where we perform this manley ritual, are all scraped up...........definitely by deer ;D Funny, it used to be thought that when you were in your deer stand and had to pee, you should go some distance away or bring a bottle, so the deer did not get your scent? ?? Who da thunk ;D? Richard

The simple approach that was taught to me by a Mentor of mine was to get a 25 cent box of salt and pour it on an old stump near a deer trail. After it rains it dissappears and nobody knows why that stump got up rooted.
