I've been shooting cast .452s + .458s in my 2 .50 MLIIs for 2 years now. Like them and they shoot good, (thanks for the boolits and the link to LBT Screwbolts) and they are cheap trigger time. Has anyone used .401 cast or can you suggest any molds that throw .401s to try in my 45-70 Encore conversion. If you are using cast in your 45 are you loading with smooth blue or ribbed blue sabots? The 200 gr XTP I've been using shoot really good but are a bit fragile for my taste. I likes my cast boolits. Thanks, 10

Ive got some .401 260gr RNFP 18BHN Miesters you can try. The were .406 but i resized them. They expand a little in my media tests but drilled Harvester 50x40 CRs like mad with BH209. Ive got some Redline .401 220grs Hardcast 21BHN also with a truncated flat point IIRC. Far left bullet Expansion results in wet phone books from my 45cal and BH209. Meister .401 260gr cast RNFP Retained 234gr Expanded OD .654-.496

How fast you reckon' you were pushing them to get that expansion?

About 1950fps MV. Impact was about 30-40 yards away IIRC and the penetration was massive. It took me numerous tries and added media to finally stop one.

i modified a lee mold in my lathe to cast a smooth sided bullet just for this use, weight with sabot is 300gr. i haven't had as much of a chance to play with these yet this summer like i'd hoped but if anyone wants some to play with i'll gladly send some out
another test i have assuming they shoot ok is a size/sabot test. 401 and smooth harvester or a .403 and crush rib. both load with same pressure in my barrel so my goal is to see if there's a difference?

moto357Im talking to my caster about the same mold Redline uses. He has the 200gr version and almost never uses it. Im trying to talk him into making it smooth sided AND turn the flat nose into a spire point. He has the correct top punch to finish them off too and when finished it should be close to 220grs depending on alloy. The problem is, he is really old and not in a hurry to do anything but enjoy life. Ive got a .406 down a .451 bore before in the Crushrib but it is tight.

my mold casts at about .406 and i've tried those in the crush rib and it was def too tight for practicle use so i made the .403 die. then it loads just right in my gun with the crush rib.
i also have a pile of the nosler 210gr .410 i resize and will try the same game to see what happens
