I'm kicking around the idea of getting a Versipack made by Maxpedition. I'm looking for something to carry valuables in with the family when we travel. Whether its going into town for a nice meal, taking a trip up to Chicago to see my sister and her family, or going on vacation somewhere. I hate the idea of a man purse about as much as I hate the idea of a minivan, but looking at them I just can't get past the versatility.
The wife dropped her purse last spring while on the way up to see her family, and she lost all her ID (including her nursing creds and ID for the hospital), $400 cash, credit cards, checks, ect. I'm not sure how she managed to keep from loosing her keys. The kids needed a potty break, it was dark out, and the purse fell off as she carried the car seat with my son in it in one hand, and a diaper bag and my 3 YO daughter in the other (I was at home working). A pair of low lifes picked it up and left with it as soon as she went in the door. This started me looking for better options for her to carry valuables around in. The Versipack seems like it would do the job nicely. Plus, I'm starting to train her with a firearm, so this would be a good and secure way for her to carry. All of this got meon this subject more for her than for me, especially with her looking into concealed carry. For either of us it SEEMS like it would be a secure way to carry valuables, a firearm, water bottles/snacks for the kids, or what ever. Nice thing about them is that you can get them in a variety of colors that DON'T scream tactical or firearm. It looks like it would also make a good carry on for air travel (minus the firearm, ammo, and knife of course)
Anyone have any experience with one of these?
Thanks, Mark
(P.S. Any comments about my masculinity, and I'll run you down with my ol 7.3L Diesel and use you to clean the mud out of the treads LOL )

I must admit I have one and it is useful when you do not want a backpack and it is a bit more then a fanny pack.
I'm not afraid to show my feminine side, if I had one.......

Thanks rossman. Which one do you have? Any pro's and/or cons? How hard would it be for a thief to snatch it (not from you per-say but from the average Joe)? I'm not afraid to show my feminen side either, but right now she's asleep after working a couple hours over at the hospital on the night shift, so I'm sure she doesn't want to be seen

Mine is close to the Jumbo KISS and I don't see a Maxpedition label on it but it probly came from the same factory. A water bottle pocket, a cell phone pocket and then 3 compartments. If you have it over your neck they aren't going to snatch it but if your in a crowd and it is slung they might "pick pocket" it. I use mine mainly for trips to the park and outdoor events and may be a bit big for your intent. I can put a 32oz or one liter bottle in the outside pocket and at least 2 more in the main compartment along with snacks. Nowadays with grandkids there is wipes, sunblock and bandaids. I have bought the oldest two fanny packs so they can hump their own gear. The son wised up and instead of a diaper bag a small back pack so the 18 month can carry it.

Dwight, I knew you couldn't resist. Why don't you just pick out what you think looks best on me. LOL Seriously though, it can't be any more girly than a daisy print diaper bag that I normally have over my shoulder now LOL
Looking at what's available, it looked like the regular Jumbo version might be the safest against pick pockets since it has a draw string on the internal compartment. I like the idea of being able to carry drinks and snacks for the kids, but that is secondary. We operate almost entirely on cash, and my primary concern is keeping stuff secure. I would think that the inside pocket with the draw string cinched up would do a pretty good job. I looked at the pics of the GTG, LEO, and EDC versions, but some of them look like they put he compartments behind you, and I don't care for that either. I want them in front where I can control the access a little better. I wish there was a place close by that I could put my hands on them and get a better idea of what I'm actually looking at. I looked at the Mongo version too, and it looked too big. Oh well, we'll see.

Another consideration along with the bag is some tactical pants. I like the Woolrich Elite, well desgned with lots of pockets and I like the elastic waist band Another thing if your gonna be sans gun/knife in metro area like the Monon in Chicago, putting a couple of big steel ball bearings in the bottom of a bag makes a mean weapon. I mean big ones.

I'm in the country now This would be for when I go into the city. So long as I'm not going into a court house, or getting on a commercial flight, I tend to be "prepared". I've never liked fanny packs, but these things look like they would be all around functional, AND provide some decent concealment. Thanks for the advice, but I doubt that I'll need any ball bearings. I'm a citizen, not a subject. I'll choose to exercise my constitutional rights regardless of what the liberal court systems decide. Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. Especially since dead men can't testify.

Hey that's my line...(12/6) ;D
I get your drift about being prepared when you go into the city. I rarely do and do not like it at all. When I do, I usually carry on my person. Either inside the waist band with a large T-shirt or if cooler outside, a belted holster with a longish jacket or large sweat shirt. 4" .357. A manbag would take much of the discomfort out of carrying....not a bad idea.

Given the opportunity, I carry in a strong side holster. That's what I'm accustom too, and that's how I train. However, in order for me to do that in a crap hole like Chicago, the weather needs to stay below about 60 degrees, and that's not usually when I would be there. The alternative for me is to carry inside my waste band which can be uncomfortable, and hard to access in a hurry. I'm thinking the bag would be a better solution.

Inside the waist band is just fine, if you go sans holster. Helps to have a little extra around the middle. Mark I can show you my trick draw from this carry position sometime. I wear loose shorts and if I wiggle just right I can catch the pistol as it drops out my pant leg. It is not something to try with a cocked and locked 1911 though, I can tell you that much for sure,LOL

I'd hate to wiggle the wrong way and drop the wrong gun out..... LOL

That would be about as bad as when I dropped a cocked and locked 1911 in a parking lot at a grocery store and kicked it across the pavement.

I have no idea who Plaxico Burress is. The former NYG wideout that caught the winning touchdown in the superbowl the the Giants won agaist the Patriots a few years back. He shot himself in the leg in some NY nightclub and ended up going to jail for a couple of years because he didn't have a permit for it or some such.... He's supposed to come back this year.. Maybe with the Jets.
