I bought my wife a walther P5 9MM a few months ago and we went out and did some shooting again. She shoots pretty good but with age and Arthur I think she would do much better much quicker with laser sights . She does not want to shoot for fun anymore, hurts too bad. Problem is I am googled out and confused. Does anyone know what kind I should buy for this handgun. I have seen laser sights from 39.95 to 600.00. Help please, Rusty

Rusty........ I've got a Crimson Trace Laser on my Ruger LCP. It's a close range gun and the laser helps me get on target faster. The sights on these pocket pistols are close to useless for me. With the laser I can shoot just as good from the hip as I can trying to get a good sight picture using the sights. I carry mine in a front pocket Nemisis DeSantis holster and it seems to work well enough. Zen

I was not a fan of lasers for years. When they first came out the USMC tested them for combat effectiveness from what I am told. They took experts and had them shoot head to head and with the experts the man with irons shot faster on target then the man with the laser. Seems the muscle memory was working in favor of the guy with irons and the guy with the laser was still looking for the dot when the iron shooter has all ready fired. However, they did find among the non experts, the laser was faster and more accurate. So I figured for me personally there was little point in using a laser. Well that all changed when I saw Todd Jarret demonstrate some of the other capabilities of a laser, namely the ability to stick the weapon out from behind cover and look from another point and shoot without sticking your head out. I like that, and I think Jarret has some instructional videos out to show how to use a laser tactically and from what I have seen he makes alot of sense. Cheap lasers are worthless, I have seen enough broken crystals and sights that would not hold zero to believe that. One thing though, a good laser is still not gonna be that much of an advantage unless one shoots enough to establish good trigger control. One might start with the laser dot on target, but if you don't have good trigger control you will still pull off target and miss.

What are her shooting needs? Based on what you've said so far, I assume this is a defensive weapon. If so, then the laser is out of the question. It's a gadget, a gizmo that can and will fail when she needs it the most. In order to effectively and reliably defend herself with a handgun, she needs to learn how to draw the weapon correctly. The draw does not end until the weapon has been fired. It's a mater of proper and effective training on form and function. It doesn't have to be fast, but it needs to be a smooth process. Smooth becomes fast. It doesn't take tens of thousands of rounds, but it does take proper training, and it does take practice so that it happens as a matter of reflex.
