When I first got the 325 FTX bullets I did my penetration test I used 64grs of H4198, it penetrated 7 1/4" [excellent] remanining weight 202.9 Today I tried Wilmsmeyer's load 70grs of H4198, thinking it would blast deep into my block, It went in 5" and weighted 170.4 Can it be the 70grs drove the jacketed bullet too fast, to get penetration, again I know this test has little to do with how the load will work on living tissue

To answer your question, yes velocity is hard on bullets and penetration is almost inverse to velocity unless you use a non expanding bullet.

Edge,
Thanks, Did they change the posting of pictures, I did what Ive been doing, but couldn't get it to post. {pictures] That was my thoughts on velocity, but I'd rather a wiseman state it. I will try again tomorrow and use 67grs, and see how that effects penetration. Love them all cooper bullets. Thanks again, Marty

Bigmoose, I am not surprised by your test....I was VERY surprised at the results on many deer this year
One of my deer was at 30 yds and took almost full speed. There was not a huge exit hole and the deer ran 30 yds like nothing happened.
Most others were hit at like 75-150 yds where impact speed would be more like your first test....or slower in the case of the BP boys. A great, accurate bullet....but it still is a thin jacketed slug and subject to the laws of physics. I think with that much mass, it won't matter in terms of "bullet failure" but there could be a bomb effect that blows the crap out of stuff at high impact speeds.
Still, I am very impressed with this bullet compared to say...a SST of any weight.

wilmsmeyer, My test has nothing to do with how good a game bullet is, as I have stated several times all bullet makers I spoke to said, by packing the magazines as tight as I do is like shooting into wood, not living flesh. I do it just for fun. Barnes X bullets 300 and 350 are great penetrators and the Buster bullets is an anti tank round. What you have done is prove its an excellent game bullets and thats what hunters should care about.

Im not surprised considering the media. A media with a more "hydraulic" quality would surely yield different results but the 325gr FTX was made for 45/70 lever gun performance levels. Its going to frag to some extent. Im not a big FTX/SST fan but the 458-325gr and the 50-300gr FTX are pretty good IMO. Easily good enough for deer and your average elk. Ive only shot about 20 of the 325s in my Savage and they shoot VERY well with Re7 in the 2100-2300fps range. Im moving on to media testing next. The 50cal FTX has been extremely good in my 54cal using BH209 and accounted for one of my deer last year. bigmooseIve got a bullet you may want to try just for kicks. Its a Lehigh MATCH bullet made for the 458 SOCOM. I can send you a few if you wish. They may not have much hunting potential but i bet it will penetrate extremely well. ;D Its the 2nd from the left and i put them in a few sabots for comparison. It has a very slight boattail. The 3rd from the right is the Barnes 458 300gr SOCOM that is quickly becoming one of my favorites from Barnes using subs. If you think you can get them to shoot i could spare a few of them too. I have a Lehigh 255gr MATCH version with no BT but the base appears to be a bit over sized.

gmb54120,
I send you a PM with address, just send two, I'll send you some Barnes Buster 400gr Bullet, light them up with 71grs of Benchmark, you will be amazed at the penetration, its the twin of the 404 Jefferies, a well respected Elephant round, Make sure you have a deep backstop.

68grs of H4198 5" penetration, remaining weight 139.2 this bullet blow apart, but did great damage to the block, this block much tougher than yesterday's, not phone book, which is soft.

this is the hole in the center of the block, you came imagine what it would have done to living tissue The 325 loads very hard in my rifle, slow getting it started, it maybe I have a tight barrel. Wilms, no wonder you like this bullet, as long as you don't hit large shoulder bones, in bigger game, its got to be a killer
