I have been looking for some time for an older 22 bolt rifle. You know the old Remingtons, H &R's etc, with real blued steel and real wood stocks. Used to find them all day long but it has been a long time since I have seen any for sale on the local used gun market. The few I have seen have been horribly abused. I was wondering if you guys have noticed the same thing??

Rifleman ,I bought a used Remington target master for my son when he was 10 yrs old. It is a single shot for those who do no know but it was the only single shot that I could find that went on safety every time you pulled the bolt back. It was a shooter. A few yrs ago I got my gunsmith to bore it to 22 mag. I can hit a roofing nail 8 out of ten times at 50 yrds. I have looked for everywhere for three more to set up that way for my grand sons and no luck so far. It is like they were all beamed up Rusty

RMan.. I'm glad you asked .... A few months ago I was at a friend of mine from the church and he pulled an old 22 out of the closet knowing that I liked guns. It was an old Remington Model 341 that his father had left when he passed. They were built between 1936-1940. The gun was in sad condition...rusted from one end to the other and the stock was just as sad, no finish and all scratched up. It was so gummed up you could hardly work the bolt. ......I told him that I had one like it when I was a kid. He then said that I could have it if I wanted to clean it up and get it shooting again.....I took it home a began a total overhaul,...stripped the stock, sanded and put on an oil finish.....Took all the metal down to bare metal, applied a cold blue finish. Luckily the best part of the gun was the bore. It cleaned up real well, no rust or pitting.....My oldest grandson layed claim to it so I told him it was his when he passed the hunter safety course. ....These old guns are worth restoring I believe, plus there will always be a place in our hearts for them....Takes me back to the rabbit hunts when a kid... Thanks, Zen Like Rusty I'm on the lookout for another

I think you have to watch the estate auctions for those guns. I often think about the same thing. Where are all these old classic guns at. They have to be hiding in Americas closets and half forgotten about. Years ago my wife went to an auction and I didn't choose to go along. A while later she came home and said there were some guns on the auction and thought I might be interested, Well I thought I didn't need any more guns but I went over there. I picked up a 22 Target rifle, heavy barrel with peep sights, Made for the Sears Roebuck Co. by Marlin (I think). $80. It could use a blue job but the bore is perfect and shoots good. Years ago I bought one of those Rem single shot rifles on an auction. It was about like new and I got it reasonable. I put a Williams peep sight on it and it was as accurate as can be. It was stolen in a home breakin. They got five guns and I miss that one the most. I often wonder where it's at. Many years ago where I used to live there was a pistol club and a lot of the members used High Standard Target pistols, 22cal. I don't know where they all went. I haven't seen a high standard auto for a long time. I used to see Rem 788's at gun shows and the like. Hardly ever see one for sale locally any more. Yeah, I think Americas closets are full of forgotten guns.

Rifleman, I just scored an old Mossberg 46B on Gun Broker for $100. Other than normal 60+ years of wear the only thing I can find negative about it is that someone nipped off some of the mainspring. I got a new one coming from E-Gun Parts. I fitted it with a #2 Weaver side mount for a scope for my old eyes. It'll put 10 shots that can be covered with a nickel at 50 yds. It's no Remington but I can't get my dream .22 Rem 40x for $100. I'm looking though. My new blue-book puts the Rem 40X Rangemaster (700) at $800 for 100%. I don't see one for under $1200 and it isn't 100%. Keep lookin' you never know.

I have a box full of them that aren't going anywhere. I am guessing that there are many others doing the same.

I have an old ithaca model 49 that is not near the quality of the ones mentioned above, but I restored it just for something to do and I have never had a single shot .22 more fun to shoot. I got it at a gun show as a box of parts. Asked what it was and the guy told me and said he was pretty sure it was all there but something was broken. 20 bucks later I carried it home. Had a broken pin that hold the hammer spring in line.

I too wonder where they all are.Ive been recently researching .22 bolt guns. You could sorta say I got the fever for one my old 10/22 is fun but I always wanted a .22 bolt gun most older guns I find are pricey.I ended up buying a cz 452 military trainer and love it. Although it was more than $100 it was worth it I have a left handed son I want to teach to shoot a right handed bolt gun left handed Marine sniper style. Now Im keeping my eye out for deals on the classic ..22s I hear of guys finding them but havent had luck myself.I learned to shoot with my dads marlin 39A he still has it and its still accurate.Just a beautiful gun with fond memories.Hopefully the CZ will be like that for me and my son and daughter.Well im rambling
Take care Dave
