If you live somewhere like me, eastern shore of Maryland, the game is limited. I mean we have some coyotes, lots of deer and lots of ground hogs. For those purposes the 243 ( I have a 6mm Rem., same thing basically) will be just fine and that is essentially what the 243 was designed for. Some people like the 06 or the 7mag for deer but the 243 will get it done if you place your shot correctly. If you live somewhere where your trying to take game bigger than that you may want to reconsider. Just my 2c. I see you hunt Caribou. Ive never shot one so I can not give any advise on how the 243 would do I would imagine that moose would laugh at a 243. ;D

I used the Federal with 85 gr HPBT. This is the 85 Sierra Game King. I now handload this with 44gr of 100V or 44gr of H4350, getting 1/2MOA out of my Tikka with a 22-3/4 barrel about 3200 fps. Great whitetail load. Performance on deer is great, on par with my 270 and 06. I do shoot my of my deer high shoulder shots and they are DRT. On longer shots of 200 yards plus I will shoot for the boiler room and most of these will go less than 50 yards.

Blackpowder those are some nice caribou. Are you getting them on guided hunts or do you live up north? By the way I never told you what I use in my 6mm. For all the small stuff I use a 55gr Nosler & Win 760 (very accurate combo) and for deer I use 95gr SST's & H4350 (Varget works also). The 243/6mm calibers are very forgiving when it comes to finding a good bullet/powder combo. I've got a model 116 in 7mag, one of five Savages I own and each of them are shooters! One thing I do know and that is that you'll love that Savage.

That's pretty cool. I plan on going on a hunt one of these days but with this economy I'm probably going to stay around here for a little while longer. Around here if we aren't shooting deer or geese we're catching crabs. Not too bad of a trade off I guess. You'd understand if you have ever had a REAL eastern shore crabcake. ;D

mdgroundhogger iam sure that the eastern shore crabcake is delicious ..i also like sea-food ,i just booked a hunting trip 5 days of deer hunting on ANTICOSTI island 24 oct - 31 oct ..we are allowed 2 deer tags ..caribou hunting is way down and they're numbers are way down also lots of hunters did not tag out last year in northern Quebec..
