It a stainless bull barrel fluted laminated thumbhole. I was wondering if anyone has any idea about barrel life. I shoot the black hills 40 gr amax almost exclusively. Thanks to all, Rusty

You might want to look at the barrel twist. If it is the newer 1:9 you might not get the accuracy with those little pills, specially at longer ranges. My 1:9 loves 69gr SMKs.

I tried to measure the twist and I think it is a 1 n 9 but I am not positive.. Does anyone know from the serial number ,what twist it is? Thanks Rusty

The switch happened right around the time of the Accutrigger, maybe the year before (2002). The "G" prefix is Accutrigger models.
That is good shooting Herman! My AR had pretty good luck with 50-52gr flat base at 100yds but the 69gr SMKs really shine past that. 40gr alright for plinking but a waste for me punching paper, I let the grankids shoot 40gr. I'm really surprised you got the 75gr Hornadys to do so well shooting slow.
As far as barrel life the hotter you shoot the faster your going to burn it up. If your going to shoot those 40gr pills at say 3800fps that is pretty hot. Then again rate of fire and maintenance also has bearing. For target quality you should get in the 4000- 5000 at least but I have seen guys cook factory barrels in less then 2000 with accuracy starting to drop off after 1000. They end up "pushing the bullet", lengthening COL, to make up for throat wear.

Actually I stopped a lot of reloading when I could get the Black Hills blue box loaded with the 69gr SMKs for right around $20 for 50, now the price has doubled. Not quite as much zip as my reloads but almost as accurate. Black Hills loads a pretty wide range of .223. The red box is new brass and the blue box is re-man brass, I never could tell the difference between the two except for price. It beats the white box Winchester and the cheap Federal. Stay away from the cheap Wolf also.
I had real good good luck pushing the 69gr SMK just over 3000fps but with Varget your pretty much filling the case. I would like to try some of the new VV N540 but from what I have heard it doesn't beat the Varget. .223 with heavy bullets seems to me to be kinda tough to load for. You can shoot your ladders and get less then 1/2 MOA and then when you hit that combination it is like the switch is thrown and you get one holers.

I could not find the 69 gr SMK. I bought Blk hills Blue box 68 gr heave match HP thinking that was what you told me Rossman. That will teach me to think. They won't take back ammo anymore (Lawyers). Guess I will try them. They had about ten boxes so if they shoot good, I should be able to go buy a few more boxes, same lot #. Thanks for all the input Guys, Rusty
