I have decided to buy a savage, however I am a little dismayed at how expensive the guns are, I have decided on 2 models the cabelas savage or a laminate stocked regular model, mainly because I want a stock beefy enough to be a good accuracy platform, natchez is out of the laminate models, and cabelas wants 7 bills for one of theirs, why on earth are these guns so expensive?? steven's 200's sell for less than $300

My father-in-law has his FFL, so I just bought mine through him.
Now I would hunt around for a used one with a messed up barrel (hopefully for really cheap) and just plan on doing the 45 pacnor barrel swap from the start. Or I would look into finding a beat up Rem700 and doing that conversion. Otherwise, Gunbroker or Natchez's has had the best deals that I've seen.

I have access to an FFL from my gun club, how much money would this save

I would guess it depends on how much of his mark up he's willing to give you.

And honestly (after shipping & sales tax) buying from my father-in-law was barely (maybe $20..) cheaper than Natchez's. Small-time FFL dealers don't get the discounts the big boys do. Generally speaking, this is true for most of the stuff in his dealer catalogs. If you shop around, you can pretty much meet or beat most of his prices (especially when 6% sales tax as well as shipping is factored in).

Here in Indiana, muzzleloaders are not considered firearms, so no FFL required. I believe only the Encore is considered a firearm because of the different configs available. Try budsgunshop.com. I've had good experiences with them several times. They give the delivered price on thier site. Good Luck

FFL's are not required, anywhere, I think.

Nobody has answered the man's questions as to why these are so expensive compared to a Stevens (Savage made) CF rifle.
MKJStep, which Walmart did you order from? Just curious.......Conway WM still sells rifles, but didn't know I could order a Savage ML..........

They also have the accu trigger. Aslo, they're not that much more expensive than a regular centerfire rifle from Savage. They're still cheaper than a TC Encore.

It is a little known fact that you can special order from Wally. just ask to see the gun catalog or the special order catalog or whatever. Had to pay first and then they ordered. Shoulda seen the dudes when it arrived. FFL form or not? they didn't have a clue!

Curious again, which did they decide? I can envision their confusion.....wonder how it turned out.
I actually ordered a Howa .22-250 from them years ago out of a catalog, but that was because they had the gun in the display but not the caliber. I guess I didn't realize you could go in and 'browse' the catalog. That's the part I don't think folks know about. I guess you'd just walk in and say "I might be interested in a gun, can I look at the catalog?"..... I do remember paying first, but best I remember I paid like half......and then when gun came in I went to LayAway and paid the other half. Long time ago, bad memory, not sure, but I think that's what I did.
As to the price for a Savage ML10, I'd say that they are priced generally equivalent to a good Ruger or Remington or other Savage CF rifle. Comparing to a Stevens is not quite fair, that's a bottom tier rifle. I wish Academy Sports would carry them, they are the cheapest on earth for ammunition and weapons that I've found.

I ordered mine from Natchez (SS Lam). They shipped right to my door here in the RepubliK of Upstate NY. Their price, delivered, was $125.oo less than my local Gander Mountain.

thanks for the help guys I went with the ss lam model from tin star, they had the best deal I could find short of somehow getting cabelas to honor the camo ss price natchez has, which I was unsuccessful in getting them to do. oh well, the 2" shorter barrel will be a little handier to hunt with and the laminate stock will look nice

Oh, Man...Oh, No...Two inches SHORTER! That's gonna' knock your desired 300 yard laser beam trajectory right into the dirt(literally). Perhaps,,,,, if you took a Sims and a Kick-Eze and stacked them atop each other on the butt of your new gun you might be able to use a huge amount of H322 to compensate for that weak barrel.

cowboy-
Great choice! I have the SS/laminate as well. I think you'll be happier in the long run with the laminate stock for your end use vs the synthetic on the cabelas. In terms of the 2" shorter barrel, don't worry, you'll still be able to shoot as fast as your shoulder will allow.

I may be wrong and some one correct me if I am, but in most cases shooting smokeless loads a shorter barrel isn't going to really hurt you since we are using faster powders that tend to burn up before they get to the end of the barrel

With 4759 There was no drop in velocity. I didn't lose a thing in accuracy. Zen
