I'm 5 feet 7 inches. Interested in a concealed carry pistol to tag along with me when hunting, or just in general. Any thoughts out there on these two pistols? Bill

Question: What do you anticipate using it for while out hunting? Shooting something (what?), protection, plinking? I would think anticapated use would influence your decision. If I were going to shoot a deer, or anything larger than rabbits and squirrels, I wouldn't choose a 9 or a 40 automatic. If I were using it to protect myself against bear I'd choose a bigger caliber with more stopping power. If I just wanted to do some plinking I'd get a .22. Also, your height really doesn't have anything to do with it. I'm 5'8" and I've never found that to be any consideration in what handgun I carry or use. My "walking around gun" is a .22 mag, but there aren't any dangerous game where I hunt other than the two legged type. If I'm out hunting I carry a 357 or 44 mag but that's also what I hunt with, I don't carry a long gun unless it's muzzleloading season. I rarely carry for self defense but if and when I do, it's a 40S&W or a .380 depending on clothing and season (you can hide a lot of gun under a winter coat but not under a T-shirt).

If you are trying to conceal it, that makes a really big difference. I think nsb is right on about a .357 or .44 Mag for major game, but if you can actually expect to be able to hit something at normal hunting ranges it is going to be really hard to conceal. The Kahr pm9 is a little rich for my taste, but it looks like a great carry pistol. The Glock is a bit over half the price, a bit bulkier and a bit heavier. Both look like good carry pistols, but with the double action only relatively long and heavy trigger pull and short sighting length look kinda useless to me for hunting use.
I too am looking for a carry gun and have pretty much decided on a compact 9mm similar to those two. The Kel-Tec P-11 and P-9 look good to me as does the Ruger LC9 and Tarus 709B Slim. Was also looking at a Bersa UC-9, but it is hardly any smaller or lighter than the Tarus PT 908 that I already have. 9mm is the cheapest to shoot and I already have another which would simplify feeding the thing. My interest is strictly for concealed carry as I have a good accurate .357 for hunting if I so desire. Haven't totally thrown out the possibility of a .380, but would really prefer the nine. However, .380s can't be equaled for concealability.
My criteria is 1) easily concealable 2) very reliable 3) accurate at defense ranges 4) under $500.

I bought a taurus PT709 for my wife and she is happy with it. I am very surprised with the accuracy of it also.

I have owned both of those pistols and ened up going with the Keltec PF-9, its alot smaller then both the Kahr & Glock, slimmer too. After polishing the feed ramp it has been 110% reliable, and carrys much better on a daily basis then either of the others. I trust my life with it every single day. That being said, if I had to choose between the Glock & the Kahr, it would be the Kahr hands down. One of the most accurate pistols out of the box I have ever owned, and the triggers are smooth as glass. Cheers, BR

Do not rely on a small caliber for your woods pistol. Why does it have to be so small if you mainly want it for the woods? A glock 20 10mm is a very good choice as it is not that big and with the right loads it will stop a bear up close. The PM9 is nice, but unless you get a later model they have had many issues (check you tube). Glock reliability it much better.
