I finally got my new safe moved in..I got it for a good price and all..And I even thought it would hold "26" guns I have 17 in it and they are stacked all over each other It has the conventional 2 u shaped racks in it.. But with scope's on guns its a no go. So Now I am going to do a new layout inside and carpet it.. its 27" wide and 22"deep. I am thinking 2 rows deeb and keeping the one's used most to the front. Does anybody have any idea's? picture's please? Thanks Drop

I think the safe makers used BB guns to determine storage capacity. I sometimes chip/denti my firearms when I move them in and out. You may try some scope stand offs. They seem to help a little. Longer barrel firearms are a real treat to remove. You can't be in a hurry when moving things around. I really feel the only way to truely get around this problem is A. Only use 1/2 capacity of the rated safe. B. Take a 2nd mortage on the house and buy the a top of the line safe. C. Knock a hole in the basement wall and build a walk-n vault. Due to the foot print of each firearm, (bolt action, semi-auto, pump), it's difficult to maximize the area. Trial and error may be your only option.

Sorta like the reported mileage on my PU truck. Only time I got the advertised mileage was when it was towed! 10

I feel your pain. Don't know if this will help or not. I changed mine over to a two row design by the following. I put two shelves into it that I had modified into being barrel rests. Narrower shelf on the bottom, wider shelf on the top. Guns in back row sit on floor of the safe, their barrels resting on the bottom shelf and they are under the higher shelf. Guns in the front row sit on a platform (initially just a board sitting on a row of 3 inch 12 gauge shells while I adjusted the shelf height) and their barrel rest on the upper shelf. I made the depth of each shelf sufficient to handle a scoped rifle, and the spacing of each barrel rest so a bolt gun would fit without touching the one next to it. So if I put in unscoped lever gun or o/u shotgun there is excess (wasted) space. You might want to adjust spacing to what you want to store.
I am working on modification of another now for my sons house, and am looking at putting in a carousel that spins. I have my doubts that will work, but it might.

I went a different route with my guns. I made a room in my basement a safe room. It serves as my hang out, gun repair, gun cleaning, reloading etc. , and is a safe area all in one. Two walls are concrete exterior walls and the others are 5/8" fire retardent drywall with plywood shear wall. Door is an exterior door with locks and bolts. I like it because I can hang my rifles and pistols on the wall and look at them. ;D ;D... It would take a long time with some serious tools to get in there. It also makes for a pretty good tornado shelter if needed. Zen

Panhandle. That sounds like a great idea.

Not sure which one you got....
I worked for Sentry group for many years. A few years before I left, they had come out with gun safes. The marketing dept was trying to (IMO) say that the safe could hold "x" number of guns. Myself and a few other gun people were brought into the discussions and asked for ideas.
Many variables were brought into the discussions such as scopes, bipods and other accessories that many people have on their guns. In the end, I think Sentry brought to market a reasonable product that did what it said in terms of holding the amount of weapons it says it will. Sure their are exceptions. But the basis was that everyone with several guns probably had a few 22's, a few shotguns, a few rifles and half were scoped. Something like that. We also thought that if some guns were stored barrel down, a few more guns should be stored.
Obviously, a gun safe isn't a gun cabinet and you should expect that space is a premium and that creatie storage may be in order. I have one and we have one at camp. Almost all guns in mine are scopes and it is rated for 7 guns. I have 8 in mine and it is cramped but they all fit.
If I owned 8 bench rest rifles with big scopes and other attachments, I probably would cry fowl....but I'm an average gun owner.

Had the afternoon off Friday and tried this. I took a board 27"X15" and it is the same size as the shelf in my safe. Measured my average gun depth with the scope away from the back. About 3.5 inches. Cut 9 places where you can stand up a gun..walla 9 across! cut out a space 23"wide and 5 " deep and repeated the pattern..9 more fit... It was just osb board to see if it would work. Now I am going to do the same thing with a couple 1x8's that will space out against each other . I will have to remove some of the front row to get to the rear gun's.... But the one's I am using will be in the front. when completed I will get a pic and post it. I had them in a couple 15 gun tin safe's... But gave my son the better of the 2.. I will figure this out..lol Drop

PICS ADDED [/img]I made another mod today. It is a rough draft again to see if it would work .This way i can get 20 guns in a 26 gun safe carefully. I will make a few post's with before and after pic's. The next version will have the front row dropped down a couple inches..kind of stepped. And be carpeted and the holes covered with felt. here goes trying to post a pic. Before ok files to big off to photo bucket

Wow 12 pt...you'd give Norm Abrahams a run for his money. Your firearms look more comfy with the new design. I have a Liberty I may have to modify.

I put a piece of peg board on the inside of my door to hold handguns, might work for your spare barrels by hooking them thru the pin hole.

I am looking at the pegboard thing. But I do have a depth issue. Still working some more out in my feeble mind..

drop i really like your mod. I may have to do the same thing with mine. just a thought, if you were to put all the shorter barreled guns on one side could you put a shelf above them that would be of any use?

drop i really like your mod. I may have to do the same thing with mine. just a thought, if you were to put all the shorter barreled guns on one side could you put a shelf above them that would be of any use? Yes I have a shelf clear across the top cant see it real well though. Another option is to have a shelf with a cutout in it and let some barrels stick up through it on one end . Or make the shelf shallow with a board across the back to keep things from sliding off the back...Then stick the longer guns up behind it..Am I making any sense? I really like the way mine turned out. gonna cover it all with felt here soon. Hope I can be of some help. If you lookin the top right of one pic you can see the cutout. And one other show's some things on my shelf and look closely the cutout is visable. If tou could put a shelf cleas across...you could drop a board downand hook it on to another board that would run over to the outside wall and rest there. Kind of like a partial divider going down to hang a half shelf from. Then over to the wall. and guns could be put under that "cubby hole" See my idea? Drop
