AS usual, Tuesday is range day for Herman, our friend Bill and myself. I finally got two thermometers now. One for inside and one for outside ;D Conditions for today were: sunny, little to no wind, 32* outside and 52* inside. Since my precious .45 barrel is somewhere out in the Midwest en route to Pac-Nor, I had to revert back to a .50. Rather than shooting my newly created .50 (my old SS barrel with blued action and Savage thumbhole stock) I decided to put one of the blue barrels I got with Kevin's gun on the idle action. I had previously taken this barrel and did that "QLA" thing? Bored out the threads for 1.5" so the bullet dropped in. I had shot it and it did work OK but I just did not like my "crown"being an 1.5" inside the barrel So, I cut it off! This barrel in now 22" and sports a 11* crown with a 25* chamfer on about .025" of the very edge. I had also done some lapping with various grits of lapping compound and a tight patch to make seating a little less rough.
My intent today was to see how my duplex load of 10 gr. 5744 under 60 gr. of H-4198 with a 300 gr. bullet compared in velocity out of a 2" shorter barrel. My stainless barrel has consistently shot that load at 2460 fps with very low (single digit) ES's. First I had to get it on paper. The first shot was about a foot right and just off (I did see it hit the dirt. Shot #1 2400 fps. A scope adj. put the next shot on the paper 8" low. #2 2381 fps. The third adjustment put the bullet inside my aiming dot. #3 2381fps. I then proceeded to fire eight more shots at that dot. #4 2399, #5 2408, #6 2399, #7 2405, #8 2424, #9 2378 and #10 2405. This put the average right at 2398 fps. Eliminating the one fairly high shot #8, the ES would have been 30 fps. and the majority of the shots under 20 fps. So, the two inch shortening of the barrel cost me 60 fps. I just may up that starter charge to 11 gr. and see what the chronograph says about that.
Accuracy was not all that great, but five of the eight shots at the dot were in 2.5" And all the shots would have easily killed a critter out to 150 yds.. This barrel is definitely much rougher than my SS barrel but it shows that a shorter barrel can work as I believe..................Panhandle did?
The picture of my rifle in my basement is not loaded! That is just my little red flag I am using at the range when loaded. ;D
