I tried the search function, but could not find any info on the newer savage plug. Does anyone have a pic. and description about it and/or where the cheapest place to get one? Thanks

same as the orginal, just have a 3/8 heax head instead of slots. Is it that much easier than using the original? I know you would not have to take the stock screws off correct? It seems like you would have to make ALOT of turns with the socket VS. spinning the long slot rod with your hand.

I like the hex head better, had a slotted plug in my nef sidekick and bought a conversion plug to hex, easier to use rachet imo. gunny

Last I saw on Randy site it was $32.00. I assume it is the hex head but not sure.

I'm not a newbie to the Savage, but have ZERO experience with the hex-headed breechplug, so forgive the (seemingly) newb question:
If you buy a Savage with the hex breech, does it come with some sort of removal tool, or do they expect you to use a ratchet set?

It does not come with any type of removal tool. You simply use a ratchet set, which I am sure most of us already have.

shoottoreload, I just bought 2 hex head breach plugs from savage. They asked me if I wanted to buy the tool to go with them, I said no because I have socket with swivel so no need to remove the bolt.

Yes, there is one available from Savage but you have to buy it (same as came with gun when new)........we call it the "fishwacker", mine is in my tackle box and works great........ just not much use for removing breechplugs as it is about 10" long and requires the removal of the bolt (releasing action screws) for use. Use the 1/4 ratchet and swivel adapter with socket for easy removal without releasing the action screws.

Out of curiosity, when you order a new BP from savage or rw, does it come with a vent liner installed?

I understand now and agree with you on the breech plugs. I need to order some for a couple rifles myself, do you have any thoughts about Lehighs vent liners? www.lehighbullets.com/products.asp?cat=25

I didn't ask what a few of the items cost, as I needed them, otherwise I could tell you. I just asked for a "total". I'll let you know as soon as they arrive.
