Been sitting in the blind every day since Sat. morning. The older guy I hunt with shot a button buck Sat. morning right at legal shooting hours. And I haven't seen anything close enough except the two small does that bedded down right beside me Sunday morning. The wind Sunday was howling, gusts of 45mph. Shed was rockin like a cork in the Atlantic.
Tonight I got permission to hunt a new chunk of ground I've never been in before. I didn't get there until 4:00 PM and the deer were already out in the corn field. So I parked the truck a 1/2 mile away and walked up the road. Worked the terrain to get as close as I could belly crawled the last 100 yards. By this time it's 4:30 PM we have a 1/2 hour after sundown in Iowa so I had till 5:00.
First 4 deer I lined up on were bucks and I only have doe tags. Shot right over a doe's back. Don't know why other than I can't judge distance I guess and I was shooting down hill. Has anybody ever tried to reload a ML while prone. Sure the civil war vets. could give a tip or two but not many of them around anymore. The spent primer fell back in between the barrel and the receiver, took a bit to get that out while prone. I walked down to make sure I missed then up the hill they all ran. When I topped the hill two large does stood there one bolted the other just stood and watched me.
The scope was full of snow all fogged up still set on 9X and when I went to pull the trigger with my gloves on the accutrigged dropped onto the shoe. So I had to re-cock the bolt and take my glove off. This time 42 gr N110 BCR 300 Remington struck solid front in the chest and exited the deer's left ribcage. Huge exit hole. About a 50 yard shot. She ran 50 yards to the bottom of a ravine. Like most the deer I shoot. I wasn't a pretty hunt but I took one to the locker for my brother who can't hunt anymore. What a night.
