I have an opportunity to get my 50 cal SS/Lam Savage bedded and the 3rd action screw added by a very reputable local gunsmith for a very reasonable price.
Would bedding now be an issue if I ever decide to swap out to a 45 Pac-Nor assuming the 50 cal barrel is free floated?

As I understood it and not having a Pac-Nor replacement barrel before me, you could get the same barrel contour as on the stock Savage. If that is indeed correct it would just be a drop in replacement. If one got a different, heavier contour that would be an entirely different matter however. Some of the Pac group can chime in and you could also call Pac-Nor directly, they sound like a good group to work with. Just my thoughts.

If the diameter of the replacement barrel is smaller than the original then there should be no problem. If larger it may not leave room to float the barrel. I am assuming that the original bedding did not embed the barrel locking lug and a portion of the barrel.

Richard bedded my 50 cal and it had no effect on my changing to my Pac Nor barrel

If the action is bedded only to the recoil lug I see no problem as long as there was a small amount of clearance on the side of the lug. Some actions are bedded up to the recoil lug, sometimes people will bed the barrel nut too. Then there are people who bed 1 or 2 inches past barrel nut.
If adding a new barrel and the previous bedding job is past the recoil lug I would think you could go in with a dremel tool and cut back this area.
If it was me I would have your present action bedded only up to the recoil lug! You might even ask if he could put a couple extra layers of tape on the sides of recoil lug. Otherwise he could mill or use a dremel to add a little more side clearance. The reason for this is there is a small emboss on the lug that aligns to the receiver. This is not always a great fit( prevents barrel from turning when tightening). This why I would add the extra clearance on the side of lug because when you loosen and retighten nut it could be a little different. This side clearance will not hurt accuracy,in fact not even needed!

chris, as long as you use the same recoil lug it should fit back the same, as we speak im about to visit a friend and mill out the bedding in the recoil lug/ barrel nut area in preparation for the swap, Im using a sss lug that is wider and thicker than the savage....Bill

If you are thinking about a Pacnor later I would have the gunsmith switch out the recoil lug for a machined one, then if you use the same lug with the .45 barrel you should be okay or just use the same one on there now. Personally I like to bed 1 to 2" of the barrel in front of the barrel nut in that case it would probably need to be rebedded if you switch barrels. Some will argue bedding the barrel, so it is just my opinion.

I put a 45 Pac-Nor barrel on my HB custom gun which is bedded, has a third pillar and came with the original Savage 50 cal barrel. The new barrel made minimal contact with a small area of the barrel channel easily corrected with sandpaper. My HB came with the barrel nut also bedded. I used a Dremel tool to rout out the nut bedding back to the recoil lug. No big deal. The new barrel shoots great!
