I just picked up my first 10ml .50 a couple of days ago. I was wondering what type of sabotless bullet would shoot good for elk in Colorado? Remember in Colorado that smokeless powder is illegal. The bullet can be no longer than 1 inch. Thanks in advance.

Just curious, but why sabotless? ? You just got the gun and want to shoot a .50 sabotless? That 209 Buckhorn should work well with a 300 gr. Barnes Original and a Harvestor Black Crush sabot. There has only been a few experienced Savage shooters who have even attempted to shoot the .50 sabotless and I don't think their results have been better than saboted loads. Just my opinion! Richard

I believe Colorado requires bore sized conical ( no saboted loads) and sabotless would fit the requirements, possibley no scopes either.

My bad on not giving the reasons for wanting to shoot sabot less. Smokeeter is correct on both points. Colorado says that you cannot use smokeless powder, it has to be BP or BP substitute in the powder form (no pellets). No scopes... iron sights or a peep sight. You cannot use sabots and the bullet length can only be twice the size of the barrel bore. .50 cal = 1 inch bullet .54 = 1.08 inch bullet.

Well, the powder will have to Blackhorn 209 by western powder can't help you with what kind of bullet, might look at the 290 gr. Thor bullet which is a 290 grain Barnes and take the plastic tip off. What kind of arcane state is that? I guess they are living in the 1800's and not today, The Savage 10ml properly loaded with smokeless and a 300 gr Barnes Original will take game quickly DRT!

Thor bullets might work, I forget the overall length though. www.thorbullets.com/The new Hornady .500 SST maybe also, not sure about using it for elk or the dimensions.

I've killed 3 elk with a muzzle loader. I've used the Great Plains 385 gr hollow base (HP or not, probably don't matter)
None of them with a Savage, but with it's 1:24 twist it should shoot them even better than my Genisis does (1:28 twist).
Load it over 100 gr of Blackhorn 209. Sight it in 3" high at 50 yards for a good zero at 100. You will have to hold top of the back at 150 yards, but shoot it yourself to verify trajectory.
It puts the ROYAL HURT on elk with any kind of decent shot. I've never recovered one also, through and through on all 3 shot through the ribs.

I think you would be OK to use Hornady,s new Copper plated Hollow Based flex tipped 350 gr. Conical. FPB or something like that, I think they would work well with BlackHorn 209 ;D It has a copper cup in the base to help it withstand a good load. ;D It is listed in the BH209 load data on Westerns site. ;D
Once your threw with the Muzzleloading season can't you legally use smokeless then?

I used to use the 385 grain Hornady Great Plains 50 Caliber lead bullet and 100 grains of 777 or Pyrodex. Ever deer was DRT and in my short traditions inline it was good out to 100 yards and then some.

Screwbolts: When the ML season is over, I think you can do just about anything you want with a ML during the Rifle season. But I am only getting a ML tag that I have to draw in a lottery. After the Colorado ML season, it is back to Illinois to hunt whitetails!

Here is a link to the old board on a range report I did using BH209 measrued out at 120 grains. After reading my report you will not want to use the Hornady FPB. The Thor bullet is legal in Colorado as a 250 grain hollow point or if you get the ballistic tips and pull the tip off you get the same thing as the hollow point. I am not sure of the 300 grain hollow point bullets length. I only have experimented with the 250 grainers. You can get a tighter group than in the report if you knurl the bullet from the top of the skirt to the Ogive. dougva.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Savage&thread=10577&page=1Enjoy and I hope this helps.
