I made a new thread for my question.
A question or 2 for all you experts:
a) Why does Savage use a Breech Plug that is larger than a 5/8x2018 threaded Plug? It would leave us with a thicker barrel wall.
B) is this simple a carry over from the ML10 breech plug designed for modules?
c) Why did you spec out the DD barrels for the larger Savage Plug? Wouldn't it have been just as convenient to have used a Knight 5/8x2018 hex headed plug or one of similar design. Yes they have them that don't require a Plastic jacket.
d) what is the actual diameter and pitch of the Savage Plug?
If Richard was to cut his barrel down, and then have it fit or do the work himself for a 5/8 x 2018 threaded BP, this would leave him with more material thickness supporting the BP. This may come into play if he chooses to cut a barrel off and be farther up the taper.

A) because; ;D B) probably; C) because ;D actually so that the standard plug would work...no need to reinvent the wheel, and it already has vent liners and such would be my guess; D) 11/16-16
Yes Richard could probably use something other than a Savage plug. RBinAR uses a 9/16 plug if I recall...but he can give you the details.

::)I use the 5/8 X 18 size for my breech plugs. I chose it because the threads are common and stock can be purchased from almost any supplier.
The cutting tools are as common and can be had with any style or coating one would chose.
The diameter of the thread is no so critical except it has to be large enough to allow at least 75 to 80% threads and some over run to provide a forward stop for the plug.
The smaller the caliber the smaller the plug can be. However extremely small plugs offer no great advantage. They could be shorter because fewer threads are required of a fine small bolt to achieve 100% engagement but experience has shown shorter plugs are needed only to a limited extent.
Even in smaller caliber (such as the new experimental .366/.358) I don't bother with a smaller plug because of the expected chamber. With a 7/16" chamber it's similar to 45 caliber.
