While I agree anything based upon the 308 case is an excelent round (244, 25 Souper, 260, 7-08, 308, 358) I have 5 rifles in 3 of these calibers. For a small framed lady, a young hunter, or a recoil shy hunter I'll suggest a 6.5 Grendel or the same thing by a diffrent name the 264 LBC. A 6.5 mm (0.264 inch) caliber based upon the 7.62x39 case. 120 to 140 grain bullet options, better long range ballistics than a 308, zip point nothing recoil, AR and bolt action platform options. I like it so well I'm having a 799 Remington built into one.

Al That bear that dressed at 330#s would have exceeded 400#s live weight. That is a good-sized mature bear and congrats on such a fine harvest. Of all the creatures I might encounter in northern wilderness the one I would consider any real threat is the Black Bear. Never experienced the Bluff Charge but had an angry Sow display her anger when her cubs were getting too close to me for her comfort. She went upright growling and if she would have quickly dropped on all fours a charge more than likely would have occurred. Yeah the safety on my rifle was off and ready to shoulder. Just glad the cubs heeded mother’s anger and went to her. This incident I never forgot. Ed Ed, and that was a spring bear, so hard to say how much weight they lose over the winter. I've seen a few top 450#, also spring bears.

On a fat bear there is little fat just back of the forelegs midway between the back line and the belly. This is where the bullet can easily reach the heart and lungs that are vital to the bears life. Much has been mentioned about cartridges made using the .308 case. This was called the NATO military cartridge and used in the M14 that replaced the M-1 30-06. It soon broke all the records set by the M-1 and soon Winchester started the sporting rifles in this caliber calling it the .308. Since then the case has been used to make a host of rifles. The bullet used in the 7.62 M-14 was the same as that used in the M-1 30-06. The case was the big difference. It was shorter and better for automatic or semi-automatic weapons. The grand scheme of the NATO cartridge was that all NATO countries could use the same cartridge and naturally the USA could give ammo to all members. Back to the thread subject, the end result will be caused by where the girl is able to place the bullet selected. Ben

6.5x55 with a 140 grain Nosler Partition. Inside of 300 yards with a muzle velocity of around 2650 in factory ammo (I believe Federal puts that out as factory but your supplier may have to order it, or if you reload you can get 2800 fps out of it in a completely safe load for newer guns, either way penetration will never be an issue. She can concentrate on shot placement and have full confidence in her gun. It is extremely deadly on just aout anything shy of 1000 lbs.

Well the wife came home over the weekend and we went and bought a savage axis 30-06! Now I don't know if you guys will be surprised but I sure was. The last time I had one she hated it. We bought 20 rounds to shoot, didn't want anymore in case she still hated it, and she only let me shoot the gun 3 times. She actually took the gun from me and said no its mine get your own. ;D. Now what I need are some suggestions on what bullets and powder to use for black bear. And if need be factory loads until I can get the reloading supplies

For factory loads, I would use a 165 grain Nosler partition. Should be flat at +/- 2,800 fps and give an exit hole on every angle.
I owned an '06 as a teenager and killed my 1st buck with a 150 gr soft point (Winchester Silvertip) at 10-15 yds. Deer facing me and I hit him under the chin. Bullet exploded on the neck vertebrae and I recovered it.

The rifles are a little hard to find but a 358 win has a good reputation for larger game. If you reload you can tame it a little. I've only shot the Browning blr but it was sweet. Ruger made some bolts a few years back.

Good for her!
I sat next to my wife when she killed bears. Its way better than killing them yourself.
Spring hunt? You still have lots of time for load decisions. Big bears are very big, their bones are larger and tougher than any deer. It seems the heavier 30 caliber bullets are designed for heavier game. It would be hard to say a 165 Nosler Partition would be inadequate.
Google black bear anatomy. Teach her to shoot high on the shoulder. Break the shoulders and the spine in one shot. It may not be a kill shot, but there is no tracking or lost bear. Bears bleed poorly, especially fall bears, lots of fat to plug bullet holes.
FWIW My wife has used a 7 WSM with 160 gr Combined Technologies Fail Safe bullets. Very close to that 30-06 ballistics. Also a 7mm-08 with 140 gr TSX, markedly inferior to the '06 with 165's, but adequate with proper shot placement.

Savage is coming back out with a 260 this year. You can call an order it anyway you want. The barrel is a 1:8 twist which is the best twist for the 260. You can shoot up to 160 gr bullets and that would give anything a bad head ace. My custom savage is a 1:8 twist,my rem bdl is a 1:9 twist. I have killed deer out to 500 yds with the rem bdl and shot some of the 160's in it which went one hole at 100 yds.And it spits out 85 grin bullets very fast.My favorite bullet is the 100 BT and the 120 sierra BTHP The 260 is my favorite cal for deer. But any of the calibers mentioned will work on bears also. I used to know an old fellow that killed a lot of bear years ago and all he ever used was a 22LR single shot.

Well you have a 30-06, will kill any bear dead as dead,, for black bears a 165-180, partition will be hard to beat, or a accubond of the same weight,,,
for really big black bears or brown bears a 200-220 partition will hit very hard indeed
