So now I am hooked on Smokeless muzzle loading, love my Savage. I want to try using a chronograph, I do not own but want to purchase one. I need some recommendations and do they come with a stand? Thank you in advance.

Most do not come with a stand but are set up to take your typical camera tripod with the 1/4 x 20 thread. Chronographs can run from relatively inexpensive to "pricey!" For purposes of our ML's, a simple Chrony in the $100 category will probably suffice. Accuracy largely depends on the spacing between the photo cells. The further apart, the more accurate the millisecond clock can record the information. Chrony's around about one foot spacing. Many are 18" or two foot. A $575.00 Oehler spaces at 4 foot and come complete with a stand. Some have infrared capability where you can use it indoors. Most rely upon the sky to cast a shadow between the photo cell and the bullet passing overhead. Some display the reading right on the unit and some have a remote unit. Some have a built in printer. The Chrony's are very compact and fold up quite small. I think they will get you in the ballpark as far as velocity is concerned. They probably have an error margin of around 20 fps or so. I have a friend who uses a very high dollar Oehler and sets his photo cells 24 feet apart and get accuracy from one to two feet per second. I personally use a PACT with the remote readout but no printer. I just write down each velocity as it occurs. You can fire many shots and it will record each and give you an average velocity, High and Low shots, Extreme Spread, Standard Deviation. These run under $150. With the printer about $229 or thereabouts. Richard

I am happy with CED M2 unit I purchased from Midway ($200). No printer, but stores all shots and strings in memory, which you can download (USB cable) or write down later. Fairly easy to use (it is my first one and not a problem for me). Mine works of 9v battery, and the battery compartment stores a spare battery which has saved me at the range twice already. CED is competitive edge dynamics and you can read reviews on line.

I have an older model Oehler 35P. It is great! They have announced that the 35P is going to be available again @ $575.00. When I bought mine, there were no others available. If I wanted one today, I couldn't justify the new price, or even the $350.00 I paid so long ago. Now, I would go for a Chrony, or Pact, that has the remote readout option. I noticed one on sale somewhere recently at $89.00. Not sure which model it was. Whatever you get, read Richard's post about a protective box, or guards, for the unit. Sabots are guaranteed to whack anything left unguarded. Boarhog
