I am a new member to the forum, but have been reading info from your site for a few weeks. I just purchased a ML II in 50 cal and have not fired it yet. I have H 4198 on hand and am anxious to get started. I have both Hornady 250 SST's and XTP's to get started with. I have read your load section for this powder and see load data from 70-73 grains of H 4198 with 250 SST. I have a friend locally who told me to stay between 50 - 55 grains of H 4198. This is a big difference, he shoots an encore conversion in 45cal, but has experience with the 50 cal also. I would like to just start with the Viht N110, but I can not find any locally.
Thanks in advance for you help on my situation. I have spent a few hours searching for starting loads for the H 4198 and everything points back here to the experts.

Welcome to the board! Your friends suggestion is anemic at best. The loads in our data base have been proven over and over again to work. This data comes from many members here who have been there and done that with the Savage. You will not find more in depth experience with the Savage anywhere. If you are still concerned, start at the lower end of what ever load you want to try and work up to the recommended max.It really is that simple. You have went through the basic preparations?Scrub the daylights out the bore?Front base is not riding on the recoil lug?Cash reserves high? ;D

bbh welcome to the forum. 55gr would be a very low pressure load in the .50 with a 250gr bullet and probably a unstable load. I would start at say 65grs and work up to 72grs. Goodluck

Brownbasshunter, I shot a 10MLII for the first time that I received this week. Based on past experience with the 10MLII, the shots to zero the scope and the first 3-shot group were 68 grains of H4198, 250 gr XTP, and short black MMP. I was pleased with the results of a 1 1/2" group at 100 yards, but not a bit surprised.

Thanks for all the encouragement and assistance. I mesaured out 65-68 grains of H4198 and went to the range. Scope was zeroed @ 50yds by previous owner. First 3 shot group @ 50 yds was 2" with some saboted 250 cast bullets. Then I moved to 100 yds and shot a 3" 3 shot group with 66 grains under 250 xtp. It was getting dark and I decided to call it a night. Not at all disappointed for only shooting the gun 6 times. I now have some 250 sst's to start with and will progress my load up toward 70 grains as I look to improve my accuracy.
I will post my results from next range session- may be next weekend.

You can do a search on forum for H4198 loads. Most seen to land in the 65-70 gr. range. Jeff from Iowa has taken a lot of game and uses this load. Pair this with a HBCR sabot & a 300 BO or Rem. bullets and it's a deadly combo for whitetail. IMO a 300 gr bullet is the ticket for exit wounds and blood trails. Mark

Thanks for all the much needed info on load developement.
I am satisfied with shooting 68 grains of H4198 under a 250 sst. Shot a 0.85" group @ 100 yds.
Season opens here in Western NC October 4th and we get 2 weeks to hunt this year. I hope to be ready and will keep you posted.

Can someone clarify for me. when looking at some of the load data located here on the site I saw both IMR 4198 and H4198. Are they one in the same?

not the same but very similar, the H produces somewhat faster velocities with the same charge
