I hunt with my Strykeforce x-bow AND my Palmer recurve. More with the x-bow, esp as the leaves come off. Almost NO gun season here of any type. I've used 125g THs and SPs interchangably since they hit the same out of my x-bow. Have used these for years. The SF x-bow is not lacking in power so penetration isn't an issue. I'd like to see discussion on whether there would be an advantage in going to another broadhead such as the G5. I've seen these and they are impressive looking. IOWs, is there an advantage other than ease of penetration of the G% over a Thunderhead and Spitfire?

I hunted with Thunderheads for years with no complaints whatsoever. I just didn't like handling the blades to install them into the ferule. If I can get a fixed broadhead to fly consistently at all ranges I will never consider a mechanical but as mechanicals go the Spitfire is as good as any. Here is some interesting reading including the Spitfire and Rage testing. www.extremehuntingedge.com/broadheadmechanicalreview.htm

Steve, my experience with Thunderheads agrees with Doug's, but I never shot more than 20-30 yards.

Also I have found that the Magnus Stinger broadhead to be about the best penetrating broadhead because of it's long slanted nose. The four blade is really a two blade with little bleeder blades to help with hemorrhaging. They have a life time guarantee, spin true and are pretty sharp but because of the large planning surface are sometimes difficult to tune.
However, my opinion is that if the Thunderheads are performing well and you don't mind installing the blades then you have little to gain by switching heads. I know that you lost a black bear at one time and I don't know if Thunderheads were used on that bear but bears are large animals with astounding stamina. If you don't take their heart out they can continue for miles with only one lung before they collapse. Whitetail deer are much more fragile and I think they could be killed with a field point in the right place. But I have lost whitetails also because they have such tremendously quick reaction after the slightest noise hits their ear drums. Sometimes we don't have anything to blame but the nature of hunting.
With all of that said I am also doing broadhead testing along with arrow and fletching testing. But in the end I know that the Indians would kill their prey with whittled sticks and carved arrow heads made from rocks. Too many chiggers to be putting game cameras out and too hot for scouting so I have to do something.
It is just that sometimes we over intellectualize and analyze our equipment to death because it is the only hunting activity that we can indulge in for the moment.

this is jmho-been shooting these montec/g5 at long ranges up to 105yds but mostly at my training distance's of 65 & 75yds. i have noticed some group shrinkage i think due to their exact balance. in the mid 90's i gave up razorback 5's for the thunderhead 100. i did not like the rubber o'ring & blades coming off but they flew well out to approx 50yds or so,we had trouble getting them to fly accurately to our standards out in the 75yd range but a good broadhead neverless, then came muzzy 100 3bld,they flew noticibly better at long ranges than th. i would have not switched to the higher price g5 unless i thought they to be more accurate.then there is a possiblity of a long shot needed for that elusive wapiti,i want the best for this situation. i recommend buy 3 & play.

Deadeye, you know I agree with you. I think trying out the G5's was one of the luckier things I have done in a long time.
