I've set up a 45-70 on a Contender . Muzzle tamer and Simms pad on Rynite Stock. Probably going to have to put on of those mercury recoil reducers in the stock, but I hate to do it because the whole package with scope weighs in at 6 pounds.
I tried some 300 gr. rem loads with H-4198 and the hot ones did make 2500fps, but splattered them all over the place. Not to mention the recoil made your eyes water and your nose run.
I'm working with N120 now and starting to see it come together at 41 grains, but have no idea what the velocities are.
I'm looking for around 2200 fps. You guys got any pet loads you like?

Hi there,
I have shot the 45-70 contender pistol quite a bit. I really like Reloader 7 in it and so do a lot of guys at my club. I shoot the hornady .458 hollow point out of it with I believe 50 grains max. I get 1800 fps from an 11" bbl, so I gotta belive you would get more if you have a longer bbl. Also shot the 400 grain speer with R - 7 can't remember the grains but it was very accurate, but have to seat quite deep in the contender. I just traded for a Ruger #1 in 45-70 and will be doing some experimenting with it. I just loaded some plinkers with some old 4759 I had sitting on the shelf, these are down around 1500 fps and should be soft on the shoulder. I intend to do some casting, as you know the bullets are getting pretty expensive.
R-7 as you know also shoots great with the same bullets in the Savage smokless.
I am sure you will find a tack driver just keep trying.
