Been out of commission, off and on, for over a week. Turned out I had 407 viruses! I needed a shot, some pills, and something about chicken blood and bone casting.
Word to the wise, if you rely on McAfee as your sole Internet Condom Software, ditch it, uninstall it now, and get WebRoot. Good luck.
Just like microwaves, amazing how we have come to rely on these Bill Gates Boxes. I couldn't even pay my bills till I got this thing back.
Whew.

I have McAfee and have had no problems in over a year. Does webfoot have a lengthy record of protection? Never heard of them so I was curious to know if it was them badmouthing McFee. Ben

I dont use any inertnet protection, and I keep the firewall turned off. With the firewall on, the speed is too slow for my patience. The security software is only as good as their computer code is updated to handle the latest viruses and worms. So, I am careful as to what I open, and if I think I have a virus, I pay $30 or so, and download Norton or McCafee antivirus, after looking on the Microsoft network to see if their are any prevalent viruses going around, and what they recommend for it. I've only had 2 viruses in 12 years. Also, Microsoft sometimes has a patch to prevent a virus, but there again, the patches sometimes slow the computer down tremendously. This has been my experience for what it's worth.

Buckrub,
I too have McAfee and no problems for 2 years. Does your computer automatically update?
Also, any anti-virus software can be fooled by a unknown virus....or so I'm told. (407 sounds like even too much to slip by the goalie)
Stay away from the porn sites! ;D

I am repeating what I was told by a local and highly technical computer and internet store. The owner is a good friend, I trust them. They said they have sold and recommended McAfee in the past and just lately have they found far too many viruses slipping through. Plus the software is unstable. What happened to mine was that the actual McAfee core program got corrupted so wasn't working at all. But when they worked on it to clean the viruses they said "We've 100% changed our mind on McAfee and no longer suggest anyone have it, in fact we recommend they immediately uninstall it."........ That amazed me as much as it does you guys. I asked further and said McAfee was 'big one', and they agreed but said they'd gone downhill fast. If you guys have no problems, then fine. Wilms, true......no single protection system can catch every virus, because 17 year old boys in Calcutta are sitting there daily trying to write 'challenge' viruses to all the known Protection Software, and sometimes they succeed. The issue is how good the Condom Companies can find, build, and distribute the 'fix' for that one before it proliferates. I think that's where McAfee has gone down. This company did say that in the last 5 years they have gone to McAfee TWICE but currently don't recommend them. They said that there has never been a virus that WebRoot did not catch and they recommend that now. However, they use EIGHT simultaneous programs to try and catch them all.......and of course most of us can't afford eight, plus some might even be incompatible if used together on some OS's.......... It's a mess. I know I was out of commission 10 days or so and it is like being without a microwave!!! How'd we ever learn to do it before these things?

The issue is how good the Condom Companies can find, build, and distribute the 'fix' for that one before it proliferates. I read that the hackers will wait until Microsoft comes out with a patch to eliminate a certain vulnerability in their software, and when the hackers see that, they race to find out the vulnerability and exploit it, before the general public gets around to installing the new patch, if they do. That is how I got the blaster worm a few years ago. But given that the antivirus software has to continually update itself, in order to be current, and as buckrub pointed out, different antivirus programs are better or worse at detecting and eliminating a given virus, I, again, opt for using no antivirus software, which makes my computer run faster, and allows downloads to download smoother, and I find that if a virus is suspected, that an antivirus program can be downloaded in a few minutes, after some brief research on which one to use for the particular problem. This is my opinion, and my purpose is that I hope people will think it over first, before ordering a whole bunch of software, that has to update itself all the time in order to be any good. Peter

My job is using a computer, the internet and a well known inventory database. This doesn't make me an expert, but I am well versed in software that stop hackers. I had used Norton and McAfee Corporation versions of anti-virus software in the past on my home p.c. and neither one was completely affective. Some internet research and contacts w/our internal I.T. department revealed the following freeanti-virus and firewall software: Free Comodo firewall: www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.htmlFree Avast antivirus: security-and-protection.com/index.asp?aff=103&camp=gg_avast_us&se=googleThe COMODO firewall software runs continuously in the background and does not, I repeat does not slow your computer down. This is and excellant firewall and is very efficient at catching "phishing" of your home p.c. . You approve who you allow access via messages from this firewall. If you download, use only the firewall, not the anti-virus, well get to that below. The Avast anti-virus was and still is number one in the industry at catching, cleaning/removing and frequently self-updating. When it updates, it pops-up a small message window and tells you in a computer voice it did so. I have used both of these for the last three years absolutely free and they have totally prevented malicious activity on my home p.c.. ;D Please give them both a try!

Corvair is right on this -I had problems with Norton before I went with avast 4 or 5 yrs ago- none since- my uncle had a lot of virus/ trojan problems in his business- he always had McAffee and spent quite a bit of time with McAffee techs to get viruses out of his system- I talked him into switching to avast as its free and self updating and he hasnt had any problems since..... I think some internet providers do a better job screening viruses before they make it to the end user than others do- but I will keep useing a firewall and a good antivirus. Rick

I use the AVG free antivirus on my computer and have had no problem since starting it. Problem with Norton, and McAffee is they want you to buy a new copy every year and most folks don't. I have had a number of clients load the AVG to replace aging versions of the paid products that quit working after 12 months. AVG also has other for pay versions that have more bells and whistles, but the plain Jane free version works well for me. I don't need the other features. Sounds like Corvair has found some good alternatives as well.

I got rid of my virus headaches and slow computers almost three years ago. I bought an Apple. The Apple has no virus protection and zero problems. I still have a Microsoft computer just to have something to work on. ;D Steve

Buckrub, I figured you were a dyed in the wool Linux man considering your logo. Why would you make yourself dependent on Bill Gates' buggy product anyway?

I paid Macaffee and then I paid a tech to uninstall it so he could 'clean up' the mess. He installed Avira and said it was better. All I know is the last bug I got shut down everything.

Their site's download is for both the firewall and antivirus. Do you load the total "Commodo Internet Security" onto your system, and then delete the antivirus portion of it?
