As Herman said, we had a good day at the range. The weather was mostly sunny with temperatures in the 35 to 55* range. The was a light breeze but mostly a tail wind. We had a nice flock of turkeys parading behind our range house just as we finished shooting....................It sure gets tempting
First off, I had the pleasure to take one of our members rifles to the range for a little testing. This is a laminate that I had pillar bedded a couple of months ago and had to wait on Pac-Nor to deliver one of their jems..........all 25" worth. I had fired one shot at home just to check things out. I mounted a cheapy "Savage package scope" (Simmons 3x9) on the members aluminum mounts. I fired one shot at a clay bird above and to the right of the target and actually landed the bullet on the target (one foot high and a foot to the right ). Having an exact reference point, I simply dialed the crosshair to the point of impact and proceeded to fire a three shot group! Needless to say, .586" group with a 200 gr. XTP, Blue Harverster sabot and a duplex of 17/56---5744/H-322 made me feel good! And, to boot, the velocity I got: 2791 fps with a ES of only "3" was even better! So the day started off real good.
Next up were the 225 FTX's. These bullets had been sized down to .448" and then knurled up to around .452" with the new knurling tool I bought. Like Edge's and a few others. Then these bullets were sized down to .4505" in another die courtesy of a super member. The first load was a little anemic but gave a respectable 4 shot group. 15/55-- 5744/H-322 duplex
Next I switched the 5744 for N-110 and the velocity jumped up 100 fps but did not group as well.
Next up was the 250 gr. FTX (same sizing) with the same load as #1 Grouping just so-so!
On target #4, I tried the 200 gr. FTX MOLY coated using the 17/56---N-110/N-130 duplex. This got the velocity up a bit more and gave me a nice
1/2" three shot cluster
Target #5 was shot with the same 200 gr. FTX moly coated and 71 gr. of N-120 but grouping was not all that impressive.
Going out to 200 yards, I shot the 200 SST with the same 71 gr. of N-120. This had all five in 3.036" with shots 1,2,3 and 4 in 1.684"
Group 7 was the same 200 SST with 17/56--- N-110/N-130. Don't know why shots 1 and 2 were out, but 3,4 and 5 cut a 2.3" group!
And there you have it, the good the bad and the ugly!
