Everybody here has given you a wealth of info. I have a 308 and love it. I also have a 7Mag which I shoot pretty good. But for all the supposed extra power of the 7mag, my 308 will kill just as dead with alot less recoil. Which makes it a pleasure to shoot, a big + when your joints don't work quite like they used to! ;D Sure if you need the extra power go with the '06. You can't go wrong either way.
Just my 2c.

Well I bought the 30-06 but my son bought the 308 that way we could shoot both. I got that back in March of 2010 so I have had it a while. I just bought a S&W MP15 Sporter in 223 and 556 just for fun.

Which can you reload the most different size bullets in? From yotes to deer and maybe pigs with one gun. Which would be the best bolt action gun? I see where you went with the 30:06. Not a thing wrong with that. The .308 do tend to have a edge in the bench rest accuracy department. I think a lot of that has to do with it being a short stiffer action and the fact you can fill the case capacity better. I give the nod to the 30:06 for general purpose hunting guns. In general it will handle the heavier bullets better. Bullets in the 180 and 220 class that is.
