I cannot so who is was, I think RB or edge, and I do not want to speak for them, but had a .050 "rule". Generally something like a .45 bullet in a .50, a .40 bullet in a .45. Hence the .050 rule. Any smaller bullet, like a .429 or .430 in a .50 caliber, with the current type of factory sabot material seemed to not shoot as well, even in sabots designed for the .430 bullets. In actual use that seems like a valid rule. I could not get .430 bullets to shoot well with smokeless but they did well with Pyrodex in my Thompson Center. Perhaps that is why there are no effective commercial sabots in the .50 to shoot .30 caliber bullets. Edge gets something like that to work but he is a skilled machinist and he rolls his own sabots so to speak out of a harder material, I think a PVC type material. They are a thing of beauty, almost too pretty to shoot and then I think he even pre-engraves them. Whoever made the "rule" will give you all the correct details.

Whyohe & Jims, thanks for the welcome to the boards. I have been impressed by how helpful everyone is, as well as how vast the technical knowledge that is shared so freely.
In my old age, I am a lot less interested in how fast it goes, and especially how hard it kicks. My poor neglected magnum centerfires gather dust in the gun safe while I hunt with light kicking .257 Roberts, 7mm-08, or .44 Ruger Carbine. For now, I am thinking I'll be pretty happy with 2300-2400 fps and a good 200-250 gr bullet, if groups are 2' , or so, at 100.
I can't wait to get back out the the range to play with my new toy!

Congratulations on your new gun David, I'm a newbie too. Just picked up mine on the 12th. Spent quite a bit on nesscessities this morning. I'll be starting with AA5744 and Hornady 250 gr. XTP's. Dippers are OK, but a good scale is actually one of the less expensive items you could buy --- just a thought.
