Well after researching and reading your advice and posts I bit the bullet and ordered a new Savage 10ml II with Stainless Barrel and Camo Stock. I would have loved to get the Laminate thumb hole stock but couldn't get myself to spend the extra money, and I probably would have been worried as hell in the woods that I would scratch of damage it. I bought it at Natchez, 549.00 + shipping with no taxes since I'm not in there state. I also bought a set of the Lee Powder Dippers. I'm still not entirely sure what powder to buy, some have said 5754 and some 4759 I'd appreciate if anyone wants to jump in and educate me on the differences and applications of the different powders. Can't wait till it gets here! Just going to have to convince the wife it only cost $150.00. She might not kill me if she believes that!

If your going to dip for a while till you can buy a scale 5744 is tough to beat. It is pretty forgiving on being a little off.

Congrats david! I have the same gun & have had great success. I would recommend the 5744 to start w/ the lee dippers. If your anything like I was your just scratchin the surface ;D the addiction starts soon! steve

Just an FYI, LEE beam scales are only $22 at midway, can probably find them even cheaper somewhere else...IF you aren't comfortable with a dipper (personally, I am, but some are not...)

David,
Welcome to the board/Savage ML family!! You could also check Ebay for powder scales. I used 5744 for almost all my shootin last year & took a 6 ptr using 300 gr Rem.'s,Harv blk cr ribs, cci primers & 45 gr 5744 at 110 yds. Worked nice. Be sure to read tips/hints section and clean your new gun before shooting. Important to put anti seize on breech plug & ventliner too.

Worst mistake my friend made with his was to put cheap rings and bases on it. Rifle would not group any better than 5 MOA. I talked him into a good steel set and the groups shrank to sub 1MOA. I knew the rifle was capable because I sold it to him, I just wouldn't sell him my scope!

You have made and excellent choice and it should bring you years of pleasure. Wives are normally senseable and understanding if things are explained. Point out that having a happy husband directing his interests into things other than adultery or getting drunk or dopped up is to her benefit. Point out that should you pass on first all your toys will make for a very profitable and popular auction for her. If you handle this just right she will be thrilled that you are such a rugged outdoorsman and that the primary purpose was for her benefit. And don't let guilt creep in to destroy you pleasures. After all, how many pair of shoes and purses are in her closets? Follow the suggestions regarding that first cleaning and enjoy your rifle. BTW, buy yourself a large tool box to hold the brazillion can't do without stuff. Ozark

Welcome to the group! Someone mentioned to look on E-bay for a scale. That it what I did and I got a nice 505 scale for $24. You can us your dippers to get close and then top off the scale with a powder trickler (get used on e-bay also). As far as the wife goes, just tell her that you had to have it for health reasons. Ya know smoking is bad for your health! ;D

I doubt your wife will kill you dead. She will probably only kill you maybe dead. It is easier to recover from maybe dead. I here by offer to sell you my ML-II for eleven hundred dollars. See you found one half priced. Enjoy your purchase

8-)I hope your wife won't kill you but if she does you'll die happy. Do you think she'll try to sell your 10ML when your gone and if so what's your phone number?

She won't kill you over the purchase of the gun. What she will kill you over is when you start sleeping with the gun and buying it lot's of dresses and jewelry.

I am indeed a very lucky man. My wife actually encourages me to buy guns at times. Guys, she has sisters but they are already married. Too late.

Great choice on the Savage. Dipping 5744 works great that is how I started. 5744 always goes bang! Has the highest Nitro content of all smokeless powders, hence very easy to ignite. When the new muzz comes in, just take the wife out to dinner and have a dozen roses on hand, works every time!

Thats funny because my wife bought my Savage for me for Xmas two years ago after hearing me talk about it for over a year. Then she's killed me "almost dead" several times for all the accessories that I've "had to have" to go along with it since then. ;D

Chris: It has been said it is not the initial investment that is the problem, it is the upkeep and maintenance. That could be said about guns too I think.

After you buy the scope, bases, rings, sling, loading jag, sabots, powder, tool box, anti seeze, recoil reducers, recoil pad, leadsled, spotting scope, targets, cleaning stuff and a case you will be able to see her point through the little slits in the eyes as the swelling goes down.

The only reason I can write this is she doesn't know about this site. ;D ;D ;D

My wife's favorite quote is, "The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys."
Yep, and she said that just before she went into the Diamonds International in Cozumel last month and bought a $480 ring. Later I asked her "How much did you spend for that ring?" She answered, "About the same as you spent for one of your guns."

I too recently joined the Savage ML club. Stainless/Black @ $544. from Natchez. I'm not new to muzzeloading, just new to smokeless ML. Luckily, I stumbled onto this message board and have already read good answers to most of my questions. Still happily reading my way through the thread list. Has anyone tried AA-1680?
So far, I have only shot it about 20 times. Just enough to chrono a few and get it "On Paper".VV powders are hard to find here, so I tried some SR 4759, and H-4198 I had on hand, with some "Gun Show", hard cast, Keith style .452 bullets that weigh 258 gr on my scale. Avg about 2250 fps with 4759 across my chrono., and 1900 fps for 2 shots with 4198 before it quit reading. Guess it just got too dark for the skyscreens.
A local gun shop owner here is gathering an order for powder. He said he usually orders in May for his own use and for others that wish to save money. I plan to add a fair list to his order. In the meantime, I ordered a supply of MMP sabots ( I hadn't heard of Harvester until finding this board), and have quite a few bullets of various kinds to play with. Most of the bullets I have are .430 dia, in 180, 200, 240,and 300 grais. I was disappointed to read that most of you have not had success with .430 bullets. I also have a few H-XTP 300 gr .452 I am looking forward to trying them all in the near future.
My wife never noticed the New Baby among the throng! So far anyway!!

boarhog welcome to the board! if you keep the pressure low you might get good accuracy with the .430 bullets. I think the problem most where having is that as they tried to increase speed the pressure would blow/drill the sabot. Being plastic it is the weak link/ safety valve. I'm sure others will chime in and give other reasons. i got H-4198 ti shoot good out of both of my MLIIs with the 290 TMZs using 65grns. congrats on the new gun and have fun with it! check the tips and hint too (if you already haven't )
