Does anyone know the difference between pistol and rifle primers, besides the obvious ability of rifle primers to contain more pressure.
Are rifle primers actually hotter than pistol primers?
I have a contender load ,based on a necked down 44 mag cartridge, and wonder if ignition would be helped by a hotter fire?

I'm no authority on the subject but I do know that the thickness of the primer cup varies from type to type to better handle the rifle pressures and there is a difference in the height of the primer between a rifle primer and pistol primer resulting in high or low primers if they're swapped out. I think that's with the large rifle and large pistol primers that that exists. Maybe someone in the know can clarify it further.

if needed small rifle can be used in in small pistol but i would not use small pistol in place of the small rifle as u mentioned the higher pressur. I tried the small riffle in .357 magnum loaded fifty rounds to see if it made a difference in the acuracy i did not notice any if very minor changes in acuracy. and i dont have a chrono so icant say if velocity changed. I do know the small riffle primers are harder as my ruger gp100 i have the trigger set at 3 pounds so it has a reducesd hammer spring wont set them off gets light hits i had to use my stock blackhawk in order to shoot them. also what powder your using will determine the primer needed for instance i use 2400 alot it does not need and does better with non magnum primers.

I'm using 23.5 gr VV N110 in a 357/44 Baines-Davis(44 mag necked down to .357) I was thinking more fire is better ,although I can't complain about ignition or accuracy with pistol primers.
I was thinking I could load more N120 than N110 and with a hotter primer and may be milk more velocity out of it.
I just like to tinker.

Have used both in my Blackhawk 357/44 mag with no problem. The rifle do not have as deep a dent in them as they have a little thicker cup or stronger metel not sure which.
