I posted a while back about a gun I am putting together. Savage dual port target action. pac-nor 45 barrel. H-S precision stock. I got busy with other matters( not hunting ) and still dont have it together yet . I did get the breech plug and priming system though the other day. I was able to get my hands on a case of federal LR magnum match primers from my salesman a few weeks back. I drew up plans for the plug and primer carriers I wanted to go with & gave it to my machinist buddy. I guess some go with cut down cartridge cases or even the 45 acp (Edge, I think). I wanted to make this my own..ha ha. Here are a few pics. I can use this same plug with 209's by changing boltheads if I wanted. I removed the ejector parts from the std. bolthead for my application. The flame travel is under .800" thru a savage-type vent liner.

Are you using a pressed in bushing or vent liners? Are you just going to get a mess of them holders CNC'd? Great idea! Richard

Are you using a pressed in bushing or vent liners? Are you just going to get a mess of them holders CNC'd? Great idea! Richard Richard, My buddy CNC'ed these. He made me 16 I think. I told him they had to be as close as possible in OAL for consistant headspace and seal at the end of the .240"dia. tip. I checked them and they are .0003" max deviation from longest to shortest They can be reprimed with my RCBS hand primer tool. I am making a deprimer handheld tool too. (make this stuff up as I go along.. Since the re-priming isnt a big deal..I wasnt really concerned about having a lot of these on hand. (The primer carriers). That would give a guy something to do in between shots if you wanted to kill a little time. I was originally going to go with the 209's when I fell into the case of FED. GM215M's. This breech plug has a 1.100" deep cavity .380" id. with a savage style vent liner screw at the bottom. (.0312")

Whats the flame path diameter on your primer carrier? Look forward to seeing the final look and how it shoots more importantly.

Whats the flame path diameter on your primer carrier? Look forward to seeing the final look and how it shoots more importantly. Hi, Sorry for the slow response...been away for a few days. The diameter as seen in the pic is 3/32" (or .937") A typical flash hole on a c-fire cartridge is around .080". Actually I told my buddy to change it to a #36 (.1065") but he forgot. I will see how this does and can easily enlarge them if I want on my drill press. Not sure when I will get things together but will post info as I get it.

Great idea and great execution. Are you going to manufacture these for sale? Jon Didnt plan on it for now. My buddy was good enough to turn these out for me but he isnt really wanting to do this stuff to sell. I hope to get my own lathe and milling machine in 2010..if so, I might be willing to take on a little work.

I was just re-reading some of the older posts and marveling in the advancements that have been made in the world of smokeless muzzleloading. Rock on bros.

Yep, and some never got the credit for their design.

Very interesting to see where things originate and how some claim ownership.

Here is yet another innovation from the past that everyone has picked up on and started using, the 'rear sealing' breech plug. First ones that I know of who started using this style was SMI who started converting other guns to smokeless back in the mid '80s. I believe that was long before most all of the smokeless builders had even started building smokeless rigs. I have a gun that SMI converted for me and one of the breech plugs that is still the same lo these many years. www.smokelessmuzzleloading.com/index.htmlSMI's original rear sealing breech plug:

Nothing really new about rear sealing. I think even TC had some in their smokers years ago. NULA plug from over 10 years ago.
