Anyone doing it?
A good friend has been going a lot lately and getting into some 12"+ perch on Irondequoit Bay (Near Rochester NY). This guy fills his freezer each winter and we eat perch almost everytime we get together. The tastiest, sweetest fish I know.
Around here everything has been froze up real well for a while now. A real Ice Age
Wish I could do it more but I only seem to get out a few times each year.....and I always use HIS stuff cause I ain't got none!

Not through the ice, but have caught some bottom fishing with worms out of a boat. Unfortunately we only have one lake here in Southern Illinois with Perch (Devils Kitchen Lake). Funny that a thread about Perch surfaced now as i was just reading about world record Perch last night. Seems that there was a report of a 4lb+ Perch caught back in the 1860's, but that is somewhere around a pound over the current record, so that weight is questioned. Can't imagine a 3-4lb Perch! Wonder what a 12" Perch would weigh? Sounds like some good eating! www.dnr.state.md.us/dnrnews/pressrelease2006/031606a.html

Perch are my second best eating fish. I'm getting ready to do some perch fishing next week. Here they spawn under the ice in February in shallow water on sand bars. The best baits here are wigglers(mayfly larvae), minnows and jigs. My favorite jig is a Swedish Pimple. Mike
Kerry,
12" perch weigh about 1 lb on the average.

Never through the ice, but as a kid we used to catch hundreds at Tuscarora Lake, New York. Acid rain ruined it in the 70's, not sure if the fishing ever came back. We always used shiners we caught off of our dock. edge. We always had a big fish fry, just dredged in seasoned flour and deep fried...they were great times

Perch are a delicious fish. Remember the walleye is a member of perch family.

Great thread. Went ice fishing at Greenwood Lake N.Y./N.J. Tues. and 2 of us caught 5 really big fat perch. Hadn't fished there in 40 years! Maybe I'll give Irondequot Bay a try sometime, Wilms. I also like a beetle spin with an ice fishing jig with grub instead of the rubber grub. I hope to try for those largemouth fish that of course are catch and release in winter...

Caught two nice bass and lost a bunch. I think the minnows that I first used were too big. Lots of fun. Am amazed how much better it is since modern equipment has come along. This time of year alot of stores are sold out of ice fishing equip, especially because it's been cold. I have had good experiences buying from Thorne Bros., I think in Minn. over the internet. A quick and easy recipe for a fresh caught fish through the ice, is to fry the fish fillets in oil, and heat up vegetable soup. When the fish is done, dice it up and throw it in the soup. It creates sort of a chowder.

Don't fish for them thru the ice. As soon as the ice is out, I'm on the the Finger Lakes catching them until it's time to chase whitetails again. My freezer is full of plenty of venison and panfish (some walleyes and bass for good measure).
