Went to NW Iowa last weekend for opening day pheasant season. Still a lot of corn in the field because of the rain. But we had a good time. Four of us shot 20 birds over 3 days. It dried out enough Sunday afternoon. So the farmers were able to get back in the fields. Should be some good hunting in a couple weeks if the weather holds out.

Whoa, for some reason I almost missed this one. Congrats to you and the gang on a 3-day tally. Of all the upland game birds pheasants are my favorite to hunt and next being ruffed grouse. Turkey aren’t considered here because they are in a class by themselves. ;D
For a while have not hunted these birds because my best four-legged hunting pal Shadow couldn’t handled the hikes anymore necessary to find a bird. He is now gone but when he was field scouting able he just new where to find the birds. And with Mom gone haven’t had time to do a lot of cooking either. Man she could make a home made pheasant soup that required a second bowl every time. Basically like chicken noodle but made the broth/stock from pheasant instead of chicken. You would be amazed at how good that tastes.
Look forward to hearing about your next outing.

I watched a farmer who was just finishing up a field and 20 birds blew out of the end rows up north. I've talked to several farmers here in east central Iowa. They say they see one maybe two all fall. The last two years we had very wet springs. And hard winters by Iowa standards. Sure your's are much worse. I think we might go back up north in a week or so. It's about a 4 hour drive but worth every minute. My buddy has a German Short Hair that is just fantastic. Been trying to get him to raise a litter of pups so I can get one. I have a little Jack Russel that really doesn't do a bad job. It's a lot of fun watching her make a retrieve. She has a good nose. I guess I didn't realize you had pheasants that far north?

161 I love seeing the body language expressing excitement in a dog when he is on a fresh scent. My deceased 4-legged hunting buddy was not a pointer but a flusher. Okay I had to haul a$$ sometimes to keep up with him but 90% of the time I got the birds. Also it kept me in shape a little bit. ;D Actually the pheasant population isn’t strong here but an introduction in the southwest of this province has been implemented acquiring hearty birds from the province of Saskatchewan and that’s further North yet. My favorite shotgun for hunting upland game-birds is an over/under type. If I don’t get him in 2-shots he’s home free unless someone else tags him. They are a great bird to hunt and lots of fun with fellow hunters on a drive. Think I have heard every excuse for a miss. My favorite is “Have to leave some for seed”. Ed

Brought a 5 year old German Short Hair home tonight. My daughters love her. My wife is less than impressed. Better to seek forgiveness instead of permission. Can't please everybody.

Kind of curious with the daughters being supportive has the wife's receptance changed to acceptance for the new member of the family? Or are you remodeling the dog-house for two? ;D

Compromise, The girls gave her a bath an slipped her in the bedroom. Wife seems OK with the dog only coming in at bed time and out first thing in the morning. The dog a five year old female that was about 20 lbs under weight. I took her to the vet. yesterday an she's still way to skinny. The vet said she needs to be around 60lbs shes 47 now. I don't understand people not feeding their animals. But to answer your question it was mentioned I should move to the garage. I'm OK with that TV, gun stuff, reloading stuff, motorcycles. Add a recliner life would be fine. Took her back up north yesterday, weather was bad wind rain snow sleet. Saw some birds only got one but she worked pretty hard. She just need some birds knocked down to her.

I believe the support of your daughters is helping the transition of acceptance occur for the new member of the family. Sounds like your wife has a strong will like a brick wall. Guess the wall has to come down a brick at a time. In your case I think you just have to watch for any falling bricks in your direction.
It saddens and angers me when I see how some people treat pets. But this is the world we live-in. I admire your willingness to give that dog a second chance at life and a good home at her age where most others would shy away. Then to allow her to use her natural hunting instincts in a pack hunt with you after developing a bond, you may be in for a pleasant surprise.
Look forward to hearing about some future hunts together with your new partner.

I didn't mention my new dog's name is Guss. Why they named a female Guss I'll never understand. We been bird hunting a little. I took off early Friday. Now that the farmers are getting some of the corn out I'm seeing a few birds. We got two yesterday. Guss had a beautiful point and my Jack Russel was faster on the retrieve.
Guss had some great points today. We only got one but it was good to see a bunch of hens. And watching the dogs work.

161 I'll bet you have the happiest 4-legged hunters around when you take them out with you. ;D Also happy to hear Guss?? is nicely working out as a hunting partner for pheasants. I'll even bet she's happy with her new master and caring home. Ed

Looks like you have a real storm front approaching. But I bet Guss will be devoted to weather out the storm at your side. Hope that storm passes quickly and calmer days ahead as Christmas approaches. Ed
