I watched seven does for about an hour tonight and decided to take the largest just before dark. Wanted to get some confidence. Took her at about 125 yards, bullet hit a little high but dropped her like a rock. 42 gr. N110 BCR 300 Gr. Remington. Still have a Buck tag. 161

I know that they are out there. Now it is a waiting game. There are so many different size racks out there now to find just the right one that fit the wall can be fun. Good luck!

I admit I have always been a meat hunter. I've always just shot the first big deer to come my way. There have been some big bucks but they all had their racks half or completely broken off. This is the first year I want to wait for a wall hanger now that I have meat for the table.
This is only my second kill with a ml. Warren

lucky you our gun season doesn't start for at least 3 more weeks ......congrats ;D Who's lucky? We are hunting before the rut and before hardly any corn is out. You will get to hunt during the rut and after much of your corn is out. Patience, me man! ;D

161 Congrats on taking care of the meat need. The next challenging dilemma is whether to take a shot say on a nice 6 or 7-pointer or do I wait and gamble on a possible bigger one knowing he’s out there? If the bigger one doesn’t show will I be kicking myself for letting the 6 or 7-pointer pass? Don’t you just love making that big “Executive Decision” as my hunting partner calls them or do I up the stakes (pass) for a bigger pot for this hand I’m holding is the way I see it? ;D Enjoy the rest of the hunt and Good Hunting. I'm extremely jealous here in So. Illinois with a couple of frosty mornings lately, the fever is in the air!! Gotta wait til Nov. 20th for the game to start. Hope some of these crops are off by then--too much standing corn. I keep telling myself & my sons--Patience!!

Hunting has been brutal here in Iowa for me. Was hunting some ultra-prime land down in SE Iowa just a few miles from Albia (where the Lovseth buck was shot) and saw hardly any deer. Saw a 120 class buck early in the week, but then only does and spikes.
I think the cold snap last week and then subsequent warming this week has sent everything nocturnal. Even the does and spikes are showing up at last, last light. Hopefully, the cooler weather forecast for this weekend will get stuff moving!

Gotta love the rain. When is it going to stop!! No kidding. I almost froze to death tonight. Had like 5 does and a buck show up near last light. Couldn't tell how big the buck was. He was pigging out so much that he never lifted his head to look at me. He was about 200 yards away, and I tried whistling, yelling, and grunting at him too much noise with the wind and rain. I think he was only around 120", but it's hard to tell from the side. Thought about whacking one of the does, but with the rain and the wind (cross) I didn't think it would be a good idea, not to mention the fact my scope had pretty much fogged up and I was beginning to shake uncontrollably from the cold.

Took a doe tonight right through the boiler room. She ran about 75 yards. I shot one last night right at last light. I heard the bullet hit with that wet smack sound. An she dropped in her tracks but just over enough of a ridge I couldn't see her. The other 5 just stood there looking where she went down. But when I got there she was gone. I looked that night and the next morning. Didn't find any blood or hair.
Makes me sick I hate not finding wounded game. The one tonight restored my confidence. I think the problem I have is, in the back of my mind I need to hold high. From all the years shooting rifled slugs. The Savage with a 300 Remington at 2175 fps is 3 in high @ 100 yards POA-POI 170 yards 2.7 low at 200. According to Hornady's ballistic calculator. I need to just learn to point an shoot out to 200. Instead of thinking I need to adjust for trajectory. I'm not use to something that shoots this flat. Warren
