I am looking to build me a deer hanging pole. One that I can hang multiple deer from and skin them. I was thinking of something with some mechanical help, like a winch for lifting the deer and also a set up where I can run a cable through a ring or pulley on the ground under the deer and use the cable and golf ball trick to pull off the skin once I get it started with a knife. I have some ideas but figured it is always a good idea to learn form those that have been there and done that allready. I know some of you have some pretty slick set ups allready and maybe could get some tips, ideas, or even see a pic or two. Thanks in advance for the replys, Rifleman

www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_18496_18496I think we're gonna try putting one of these on the skinning pole this year, and hang a gambrel on it. Our "skinning pole" is just a big pipe hung in the limbs of two close trees about 12 feet apart, concrete poured underneath. We have to lift them and weigh them and record that, then skin/clean them. Two old goats trying this is sometimes hard, one is impossible. Need some mechanical assistance somehow.

I'm guessing you want to do this our doors. What I did in my garage was mount a 2000 lb 12 volt winch on the wall right at the ceiling. Cable runs across the ceiling to a pulley in the celling in the garage. The Gambrel is attached to the cable and we can back a truck under it, attach the deer to the gambrel and lift it out of the truck. I can lift or lower the deer as needed for skinning. Makes lift a deer easy for an old guy like me. I'm sure that if I had some hooks mounted on the floor I could pull the hide off a deer with that golf ball trick.

Last year, my Son and I bought two cheap boat trailer winches, and welded them on the two uprights of our club skinning rack. I ran across some 3" pullys at a hardware store. Seems like they cost less than $5.00 each, and a friend that has a welding shop punched out some steel plates to use as a frame for the pullys. We welded 2 pullys per side. 1 above the boat winch, the other out from the upright at the point where the old gambrel hoists used to hang. I bought some steel cable at Wal Mart. Seems like it's holding weight was about 400 lbs. We used cable clamps to fasten the cable to the two gambrels, and threaded the cable through the two pullys and down to the boat winches. They work great! Even small kids can hoist the heaviest deer or hog.
I am building a similar single deer rig now out of square tubing. Picture the tubing welded into a Z shape, with one end sized to fit the typical truck trailer hitch receiver. Attach a boat winch, and 2 pullys, as described above, with the 2nd pully attached to the end of the upper Z leg. This rig will be portable. Make it as long as you like to get the game off the ground, and put it in your receiver when needed.
