Just spent the weekend at my cabin at the lake. Several good bucks around the cabin and after I saw them a couple of times I suddenly realized they're not in velvet any more. Seems early to me.

RAF, IMO this brings up the old though that if it get colder earlier does it effect the deer in the rut, and or comming out of velvet early. has it been a cooler summer than normal up there? and did it get colder earlier this year? i know here in W PA IMO it got cooler earler and its staying and our summer wasnt as hot as it has been the past few years. this week mostly in the mid to low 70s and night lows in the upper 50s and lower 60s. i havent been out to see what the deer are doing though

Guy had a 130's 11pt last week on trail cam in Ohio that had shed, all the other bucks were still in velvet.

Then we had a heat wave with temperatures way about average. The two I saw in my yard had shed their velvet and a few others I saw had too.

Dave W.
Got a good start this past weekend! I paid for it too. 7:00 am to 5:30 pm. Wore shorts....not a good idea...got all tore up. The bugs were out in force and so were the bees. I realized that I was out of shape.....we did a lot of work and walking
BUT...I stuck my one and only trail cam in the best big buck spot we have has over the past 10 years. In a few weeks or sooner, I'll pull it and maybe have a picture of this years target....we'll see.
We brought lunch in the woods and a bunch of water which wasn't enough. If I remember, we did 10 stands real proper. There are about 14 more to go but many of those are gun stands only and we do them on crappy days in bow season.
It looks like the closing date for the house I just bought is going to fall later then expected. Dang lawyers and banks!! It will cut into my hunting time substantially cause I have to do some major work before I move in.

I saw a young 4 point behind the house yesterday and he still had velvet. Haven't done any deer club scouting yet!

I don't like to shoot them in velvet: personal bias, no other reason...jim

The deer here in the Catskills lost the velvet quickly about 2 weeks ago, but what really surprised me is that they went to the winter dark brown/grey color by early Sept. That is definitely early. Pete
