Ok need some info from the pro's I don't use my Rem 870 anymore, since i have my Savage, but was going to put a scope on it for my Grandson, it would have to be drilled and taped, This is a Nice Gun, i don't have a Cantilever barrel, but it has a slug barrel, what do you think?

I have 3 of the B-square saddle type mounts on different shotguns. They are nice and work just dandy. Have one on a #10, #12, and #20. One on an Ithaca, one on 870, one on Ranger. Never had a moments problem with the mounts. If shooting slugs have a GOOD scope as shotgun slug recoil will test a scope like an elephant rifle. I have red dot type sights on 2 of the guns now and they work good. 10 ga

I'd drill and tap the receiver for a one piece turn-in base for a Remington 760 or Mod 4. I prefer Millett, but Leupold, Burris or Redfield will do. Weaver makes a nice no-gunsmithing mount, but it won't be as solid as a drill and tapped base. Good Shooting!

IME using the B square type of mount requires a rather stout turn on the magazine nut. I would venture to say a receiver that was drilled and tapped would benefit the from the same treatment.

Been my experience that saddle mounts scratch both sides of the receiver, no matter how careful an installer is. Metal on metal here+vibration=scratching and marring. Obviously this gun is a user and appears as though you've taken pride in keeping it nice, so I would suggest the drill and tap, unless you decide to purchase the cantilever barrel, which actually gives that great gun more flexibility.

I would just buy a cantilever barrel. Much more accurate and if you shop around the next couple of months you may be able to pick up a used one cheap. By the time you bought mounts and paid to have the receiver drilled and tapped (not to mention the chance of the job not straight) for just $80-100 more for a cantilever barrel. If you sell your current slug barrel in the fall you will have less invested.

In past years I have tried saddle mounts, but they still dont address the problem that the barrel moves independent of the reciever.
The first fix I found that really worked was a b-square pistol mount that I used to mount a EER pistol scope to the vent rib of a barrel.
Then went to a Hasting rifled slug barrel with mounts on it for EER Pistol scope on barrel. (still shoot that)
Best solution is the cantilever barrel.
However, with all that said, if you plan to keep shots under 50 yards, the saddle mount will do fine. If you want to go 75 yards, you may not be happy with it. Just my opinon.

Timney apparently makes a drop in trigger kit for the 870 now. This would be a great addition unless your gun has been shot several thousand times like my old gun. The more you shoot them the better the triggers get, which does seem to help with them.
I made a deer gun out of an old 870 trap gun once. I regret selling it now. It had the best trigger I ever felt on an 870 and it had a high comb on it which put your face in line with the scope. The only drawback was a 2 3/4 inch chamber which really did not matter to me.
Some guys who are handy install a set screw through the reciever into to lug on the barrel to hold it steady in addition to the mag cap. Then they mount a regular scope mount onto the reciever (no cantalevier or sadle) and the whole thing stays pretty solid.
Those are good guns.
