Now that some have been using the take down ram rod for a while, have you found or discovered any issues or drawbacks with it?
I was wondering how well and how long the rod would hold up for loading those really tight fitting saboted loads. It seems that over time and many tight loadings the mated surfaces at the joints could deform a bit from the pressure. Do you use the take down rod exclusively for all of your loading/shooting at the range and hunting or use it only for hunting trips?
Thanks for any info and feedback.

Dave I've been through a very hard hunting season with it, and I don't have any complaints. I can't recall the exact number of deer I got this year, but it was somewhere around 6. I had absolutely no issues with reloading with all of those. As far as how long it will last? With the new heavy duty black, I would think you would see many years of service without any problems. I ran into an issue on one hunt where I had some knurled bullets that were extremely tough to start because of the cold weather, and I didn't have a short starter with me. I had no more problem getting those loaded then I would of had with any other ramrod, and I didn't feel like the rod was ever in danger of breaking. That being said, it is hollow alluminum, so if you're pushing hard and the gun where to slip or something it could bend; however, that definitely can't be consider normal use, even a solid aluminum ramrod might break/bend in that situation.

Mac came through once again. I had bought one of the original sized camo rods and he sent me one of the new beefy black models and he added a new bullet starter for a very modest cost. He told me that some of the guys that had been using the lighter model had some problems. In particular, one customer who used a hammer on it for a particularly tight load. These things are mean't for a quick reload in hunting situations and not for caving in the doors of a fort. Here's a picture of the older camo model which I used successfully last season and the new black beefy model and the starter. Black beefy is significantly stouter than the camo model. Note the new sheath has pockets for both and an additional new feature that allows you to insert and hang the rod fully assembled. The quality in materials and workmanship in these things is very evident. You can easily thread any starter jag you want into these things if the supplied one isn't a perfect fit for your bullet. In addition to being a great guy, Mac is also a shooter and understands the needs of other shooters. He's not in this to get rich, he just likes helping the rest of us out. He has 24" and 26" rods ready to ship for those wanting one. His cell number is 757-642-8391 if you have any problems with the previously posted number.

I used both Mac's rod and his starter rod at the range a couple days ago and they both worked extremely well. I've decided to put mine away and save it for hunting purposes now that I know it's going to hold up in the field. I'm happy with mine. Zen

DBinNY,
I too am happy with the newer rod....although I have not given it a proper field test.
However, I am very happy to see the fruits of your labor regarding the quilt making class you told me you were taking. That's a very nice piece of work!

Thanks Wilms but I can't take credit for that quilt. I just hoped it would provide a worthy backdrop for Mac's rods. The snow is finally going around here and maybe I can test out the rod and the bedding (not the quilt) job soon.

After reading about Mac's take down ramrods I called him and asked if he would make me one. Super person and great quality rods plus I learned a lot from him. Can't go wrong with this guy. I love the rod and the bullet starter. Thanks Mac

Just thinking out loud. Since the rod is made from aluminum, any reason it wouldn't serve double duty as a cool rod?

Mac was overly nice and sent me a few powder vials and primer holders for me to experiment with. He's just another great asset to this board and our addicting hobby. Thanks Mac!! Shivesy

I talked with Mac Tuesday morning and we discussed the length rod I needed, adjusted for a spinjag. The rod was shipped within the day and I received it today, two days later. It appears to be a fine product and you can't beat that kind of response. Thanks, Mac!! Billy

Just wanted to post a review after having taken my new ramrod out for a tour of duty this weekend. Mac got it shipped out the morning after I ordered it. The carry case is great, I just wore it on my belt while hunting and was surprised that despite the lengths of the folded sections I never really noticed it was there. The rod itself is awesome, it is every bit as stiff as the factory T/C rod I've been using. I could just pull it from the holster by the palm protector and give is a little shake, and the sections would snap into place all by themselves, ready for use.
Since I took the ramrod out for long range shots even with my BP gun that held the rod, I will probably even carry this when I use them.

Andy, I got one from Mac last week also. Had him sew two loops on the backside so I could slip my sling thru it. I have a baaaaad habit of forgetting things, namely ramrods, but works slick now!!

After the one shot I realized that in chasing over to where the deer were I'd left the ramrod with my backpack as I had pants with no belt loops on that morning. Good thing no followup was needed!

I recieved my new ramrods and bullet starters from Mac today. Let me say, I was expecting a nice rod after reading all the comments on here. I was pleasantly surprised that my expectations were exceeded. I can see and feel the quality that went into this product. I love buying something with some American creativity and pride of manufacture. It is so nice to put your hands on something that doesn't have the little made in China sticker on it! Thanks for your help Mac and good to talk with you. Guys, if you're on the fence, get off, give Mac a call, one of these would fit nicely in your stocking this Christmas. John
