Just wanted to let ya'll know that I'm proud to announce that I shot my second deer with my new Savage. It was Jan. 02, 2009 in the evening. I was using the MLIISST, .50 cal, with 3-9X40 Leupold. Load data was 60 gr of N120, BCR, BO and Fed 209. Shot was 125 yards (using a laser range finder), quartering away. Shot went in at the back of the right front leg and lodged in the left front shoulder. Bang, flop! No tracking needed. She lunged forward and was DRT!. (When my brother field dressed her for me, he made the comment of 'man, that bullet really did some damage to the front of her'. He later told me the bullet entered and just OBLITERATED the heart and surrounding area.) Load was left in my gun since 12-02-08, when I shot my buck and then reloaded. Since then, each time I went hunting, get into the stand, re-pack the load in the barrell, then place primer in the hole. Didn't shoot, take out primer, go home, then go out again. Climb in stand, re-pack, load primer, and so forth for a month until this doe. Thanks again to all the members of this board for giving me advice on this gun, the loads, componets and everything else to have confidence in shooting anything within 200 yards. No pics, was running late for work and took her straight to the butcher for processing. Sorry Next is some family time, then it's HOG TIME!!! I'll let ya'll know how that goes. Plus, some range time to see what it'll do at 200 and beyond! Chuck

Repacked your load each time you went out again hunting, interesting suggestion. I would not have thought of doing that prior to reading your post. Thanks for the info.

Thanks guys. And yes, got up in my stand and used the rod to make sure the bullet and sabot was still packed firmly down on the powder. Again, I learned this from another member on this board. Just have to make sure no rain or moisture gets down the barrel. So far, knock on wood, it's went bang every time I needed it to.

congrats! thats probably a good idea if your load doesnt take excess pressure to seat- I havent done it but sounds like a good idea... Rick

Nice job. I have been deer less the last year and this year but didn't get out MZ hunting this year do to sick wife. Next year all the deer are in trouble. I will have my baby all pimped out ready for the woods. but in the mean time shooting and load testing will be fun.
again congrats to ya. I can't wait to start shooting the BO I have 3 boxes and N120 and H4198 at the ready.

trophy, do you put tape over the end of your barrel to keep any incidental moisture out?

Congratulations, also. I also leave my ML-2 loaded. Sorry the bullet "failed" , but glad the deer was recovered.

jkruger, no I don't tape the muzzle, but that will work. I have several pairs of gloves that I carry with me and I just use one of the gloves that I'm not using. When I see a deer, I just take off the glove and I'm ready to shoot. I prefer not to use tape because of the sticky residue left behind sometimes.
