I bought a new gun safe for my two handguns, to make sure they are safe when I am away, but it has led me to a question: how to secure the box so that a thief would not just take the whole box away and open it somewhere else at his leisure? Is it best to fit it into a wall, bolt it to a shelf, or what? Any opinions?

I don't have a high $$$ gun safe, but I do have a pair of Homack sheet metal cabinets. They have holes in the back wall spaced to line up with the typical wall studs. I used 4 lag screws in each cabinet to secure them to a wall.

always a good idea to have, keeps unauthorized hands away from them. As far as theft, all you can do is slow them down to the point where they won't want to spend the time. I agree to Lag bolt to wall. I put mine inside a small closet that would restrict the ability to use a long crowbar to either pry it open or pry it away from wall. At one point I had a lightweight one that I layered the floor with bags of lead shot (made it to heavy for one or two persons to drag away unless they brought a hand truck)

Thanks for the tips. I'll work on screwing it down to a shelf or some other way to "slow down" the would be thieves. Pete

I worked for Sentry for 14 years. I have one of their gun safes at home and one at the deer damp. 2 lags into the wall and 2 into the floor.
Sentry used to test their safes againts other brands and always used to come out on top in terms of breaking in.

Any body out there that don't have a gun safe should get one. Even the cheap Homack is better than nothing. About 10 year ago my neighbor was burglarized and stole his guns and other stuff. I thought I was a lot more vulnerable than him. We live in the country and there is another house right beside him and there is no one around me. I bought a Homack safe for my guns. Five months later my house was hit. They busted through the glass sliding door and made off with the guns I didn't have in the safe which were the inexpensive and old and about woren out. They did get one 22 single shot that I was rather fond of. And also the TV, VCR, Computer, stereo. The sheriff said they usually smash grab and run. The cheap safe saved my guns. A year later we were hit again. They didn't get any guns that time just took the TV,VCR, Computer again. We went to the pound and got the meanest looking dog they had there and I put in a total alarm system. It helps to record all your serial numbers of your guns and anything else that has a serial number. You never quite get over being burglarized. DH
