I just got a very nice used Savage MLII and am looking at a leupold 3-9x40 for it. How much difference in brightness and clarity is there between the VXI and VXII? thanks, Scott

I own both of these scopes. IMO, there isn't $100 dollars difference and both have held up to recoil as well as make adjustments the way they are supposed to

As you travel up the Leupold line you get better lens coatings and turrents/erectors. My only complaint is they keep cheapening them up but the price doesn't drop. There is a difference between the VX-III and the new VX-3, the VX-III had a one-piece tube were as the VX-3 doesn't. The VX-3 does have more modern features but those features also makes them cheaper to build.

Thanks guys, I just ordered a 3-9x40 VXII. Leupold makes light weight compact scopes compared to other brands. I think the one I'm getting is around 13oz and 12" long. I believe that lighter scopes put less stress on the mounting system on hard recoiling guns...less inertia with the smaller amount of mass. regards, Scott

I know you asked about the VXII. I cannot respond directly to that but I have a VX III , 2.5x8. It is compact and light also. It has handled all the recoil my .375 H&H Imp Mag and my 12 gauge TarHunt can dish out without a problem. I took it off the .375, I really did not hunt with that and I use the TarHunt more but less since I have my Savage ML.

I have the VXI VXII and the VXIII. Between the I and II I think there is a little better clarity and I think the eye relief is a Little less critical..But I cant really swear on it.. The main difference it the 1/8 click adjustments on the VXII however with the VXI you could theoretically "split " a click if you wanted to. Either one will make you more than happy I am sure. Drop

I have a VXI in 2-7x36 and it's not nearly as bright as I would have liked. It is very clear in good light but just doesn't let that much light though early and late. I think I got spoiled by some more expensive scopes. That being said it will hold it's zero and does not fog up and does everything else asked of it quite well. It adjusts accurately and I have gotten used to it's little quirks. Because it maxes out at 7x I keep from shooting too far with my BP gun and also too late cause it doesn't let too much light in. Keeps me honest. Ed
