Shot the new Hornady 340 ELDX bullet this past weekend.
I’ve owned this Rem 700 UML for almost three years and had yet to shoot it until this past weekend. Main reason was some upgrades I was doing to the gun.
This included an Arrowhead gen2 breechplug, as well as stock modifications (laminated stock that I removed the righthanded cheek piece - I’m a lefty shooter - as well as narrowed up the forend). Made for a much more streamlined gun that felt better in my hands. Problem was I was too busy to finish up the stock in a timely manner.
I also added some pillars to the stock and bedded the stock to the action. I added a Sightron S-TAC III 3x-16x-42 scope on a Weaver Tactical base using Weaver 6 screw rings. P
Then just as I was finishing up the gun, Hornady announced their 2023 new product line-up, which included the 50 cal 340gr ELDX bullet.
I decided to wait till that bullet was available before doing any load workup. I even contacted Hornady to see when the bullet would be available. Finally, I got email notification that the bullet was available, so I placed an order.
A few days later, I shot the gun for the first time in almost three years. 1st shot was 14 inches low. I dialed up 14 MOA and shot again. Six shots later, i had the gun POI where I wanted it.
I shot three more for group. After the first two shots, I wanted to stop… my brother and I walked down 100 yds to look at the target and pull one of his targets.
I came back, loaded up the gun, sat down and settled in behind the gun. Boom! Recovering from the ferocious recoil, I learned thru the scope. I was estatic!
Another 100 yd walk to retrieve the target revealed the best group I’ve ever shot from a muzzle loader: 3 shot group that measured 0.375” center-to-center.
Bonus was the muzzle velocity of 2115 fps.
Down side is the recoil. Ugh! 😁
I’m quite pleased with the gun. 😁
