Ok guys give me some ideas. I have a 26 in heavy barrel gun and love it. There are times when I lighter shorter gun would be nice I don’t want to go the break action route To many scope issues and I just don’t feel real safe with them. So wanting to build a bolt gun for in the woods treestands huntin 300 max max. More like 200 yd range what’s your thoughts

OK find a old Stevens 200 SA and put a short light 45cal barrel. I have one I put 45 barrel on and it is lighter than my 10ML-ll 50cal. You can get the bolthead from Luke and a barrel too. It was fast and easy to put it all together and it shoots great.

For ease of doing it im gonna have to agree with a lighter contour barrel nut gun . Hankins has them .750 at the muzzle . Forget a laminate stock if you want light as well . You also wont need a big hoggy scope for what you want either . 8 to 8 1/2 lb isnt that hard to do ready to hunt IF you look at Everything to save weight and remove a little at a time . It adds up !!! Even a wood stock can be made Alot lighter if you think about what youre doing . Of course theres carbon fiber Remington footprint stocks out there Under a Pound too !!! Think mountain sheep rifles for a real lesson on LIGHT . A 225 or 250gr Fury in a light blue harvester with 57gr 4198 is a 1 1/2 inch high at 100 almost on at 200 and 3 inches low or so at 300 yds and wont knock you out of a tree either with that 45 and still smash thru both shoulders on a buck at 300 . Get a 1 in 18 twist youll be glad you did .

dirtdevil, I just got back a 700ml form McGowen for a rebarrel. I had them put their #5 contour barrel on it with a 5in shank of 1.2 inches, it measures right at .750 at the muzzle. I went short with a 20in tube. My plan originally was for this to be a sabot shooter with low to no recoil for my sons. But after finally opening up the stock I might like it more than the 26in heavy gun I already had. from what I saw in other posts I didn't feel I was losing alot by going with 20in barrel. I hope to do barrel breakin soon with 200gr XTPs and then shoot either fury 225 or 250 in the HCRLB sabot.

Check out what Luke has that is where I got my 45 barrel from. And I got a lot more from him when he was only an hour away from me. He has breech plugs with bushing and everything you need. I really like my 45 McGowen barrel it likes the 290gr .451 TEZ and a lubed wad over 69-70gr of IMR4198 and a Win 209. I have some 250gr TEZ too.
